Hi Anne,
Well that is something my fingers would not take, that is writing a 5000 word essay as to why Ice Hockey does not take off in Australia.
I have seen many problems in the past 27 years and from the first year I started to now they have not changed all that much.
Some of the main things are as follows:
1) The rinks do not run the best programs in getting kids involved.
- I think all rinks should run under 9’s accross ice 4 on 4 braking the ice into thirds. No goalies, 2 minutes on and 2 minutes off. 24 kids on ice at a time in 3 zones with 24 wiating to get on in 2 minuts.
This will generate $480/hour for the rink which is great and it will have the best atmosphere that any rink will see. ONLY $10 / HEAD, and minimise the equipment. Helmet, Shins, goles and a stick.
2) When the kids make it into a team this is the life as an atom, and I know my son plays.
Join up and pay all fees plus trainings in blocks plus games. Approx $1500 then equipment and other costs. This is all well and good however what do all natural Australian Athletes have to pay, football, soccer?
That is what we are up against. Ice Hockey can never be as cheap however to join and enter it should be and in item 1 I have shown you a way it can.
So the little Atom’s dad and mum jump into the Pajero and drive to Newcastle, approx $70 petrol, 2 hours there 2 hours back and 1 hour for the game, 5 hours in total and little Jesse gets to touch the puck twice in the first period twice in the second and 3 times in the third because he is little and learning.
This is a childs experience in a new sport. IT IS ALL WRONG AND DOES NOT ENCOURAGE CHILDREN. As you can see I am passionate about it and that is because I love it, I have speant many hours with kids to see them leave the sport.
Thats enough for now, it is all about the children and getting them to love the sport while encouraging them to grow as athletes and people.
Too many people take it way to serious in the kids divisions and I have seen those parents and people come and go. For me it is all about all kids touching the puck, learning to become hard workers for their achievements while creating a fair learning enviroment, equal ice.
I hope that is enough Ann and please feel free to speak with me after an Ice Dogs game.
Kind regards,
Anthony Wilson #3

HEY ANTHONY,JUST READ ALL THAT AND HAVE TO AGREE WITH YOU,I WENT THRU THE SAME AS THAT BUT IN BMX. I THINK THAT IF THE KID HAS A GENERAL LIKE OF ANY SPORT THEY WILL CONTINUE TO DO IT AND ITS GREAT YOU WERE ENCOURAGED TO DO IT AT A YOUNG AGE BUT I THINK AS A SUPPORTER OF ICE HOCKEY IS WE DONT HAVE ENOUGH FACILITIES LIKE FOOTY FIELDS ON EVERY CORNER.
MY KIDS HAVE A DESIRE TO LEARN ICE SKATING AND I TRY TO TAKE THEM WHENEVER THEY ASK AND WOULD LOVE TO SEE THEM PICK UP A STICK AND GIVE IT A GO,AND I BELIEVE TEAM SPORTS IS AN ASSET TO ANYONE IN THEIR GROWING UP.
IVE BEEN COMING TO WATCH YOU GUYS PLAY FOR ABOUT 4 YEARS NOW AND TRY TO BRING PLENTY OF NEW PEOPLE TO WATCH IT,AND NOW WHAT STARTED AS JUST ONE SUPPORTER(ME)WE HAVE ABOUT A DOZEN THAT COME TO WATCH EVERY HOME GAME SO KEEP ON DOING WHAT YOU DO AND GUYS LIKE ME WILL TRY TO ENCOURAGE MORE FANS TO COME AND GET HOOKED LIKE WE HAVE

hey JOHNNO22
whats been happening brother you missed a good final series but could of been beter (the teams).
with wilsons post i agree ausrtalians as a whole like to encourage kids to play sport but love to make money. its all about money if they could get 20000 kids on the ice to play one game and make $20000 off it they would some people not all of them are in it for the money. it all starts at the top you got people trying to run junior hockey like a bussiness called accountants who try and see what is best for the kids but unfortuanly equal and fair play cant be seen on a calculater. sad reality

“it all starts at the top you got people trying to run junior hockey like a bussiness” – in that case, Anthony’s $480/h idea seems like an even more compelling argument to those at the top. Why don’t they run these sessions, what are the main objections to this plan and by who? (the rinks, demand?)
Does anyone know how junior ice hockey compares to the other alternatives for parents to get their kids involved in?
For example little athletics, cricket, footy, soccer, etc. That $1500 + equipment is quite a huge barrier to entry, i had no i idea it was to high.

Agree with all your comments about the young players, are you interested in getting a mini-mites gala day or two going their is some interest in it happening. For five and six year olds to skate as far as they do in an atoms game is so far on those little legs mind you they put in 110% effort. I know this as my Atom was only 6 when he started, luckily still loves the sport. Would love to get a mini mites gala day happening this year.

Hi Natalie it is a great idea. Something in the future we would like to aim towards to maybe compliment our Pups Club program. At the moment however as you can imagine the season is pretty full on which doesn’t leave much spare time to organise an event this year. But again in saying that it is something to aim towards for the future as the kids coming up are very important to the growth of the game and we want to retain them and make them enjoy their hockey.
