Membership Drive Update

Posted on 27 January 2012 by Ron

The Ice Dogs have had a positive response as they aim to reach 50 season members for 2012 following a breakout 2011 season on the ice. After reaching the semi-finals last year, there are plenty of things for fans to be excited about as the team aim to go a couple of steps further in 2012.

“The membership drives have been quite successful so far.  We’ve had two membership drives and are up to 26 members with 22 full season members,” Ice Dogs president Shane Rose said. “There may be another membership drive at the trial games to be scheduled before the season starts.”

In other news, the Ice Dogs are about to embark on a tryout period on Tuesday the 6th, 13th and 20th of March from 8:30pm at the LCC Sports Centre for any players wanting to be considered for the team. Once those sessions have been completed, the Sydney Ice Dogs team will be officially announced and will be put through their paces on Saturday the 7th, 14th and 21st of April against currently unknown opponents. Rose said they Ice Dogs would ask all teams in the league to come and warm up for the season, although he doesn’t expect too many takers on his offer.

“We are most likely going to try and get the Bears and we are going to send out some invitations to some other teams such as Newcastle and Canberra to see if they would like to come and do some trial games with us,” Rose explained.

“We are going to send it to all teams but I don’t think some of the teams are going to come from Melbourne or Perth to come and play us in a trial but who knows, there might be a team that is quite happy to travel out and play us. I doubt it because it is an expense but we’ll put it out there and see what happens.”

However, when the trial games go ahead, the team will be missing Australian representatives in Scott and Todd Stephenson, Andrew White and Tomas Manco who will be in Poland leading the Mighty Roos charge in the IIHL’s Division I World Championships.

Final Regular Season Games On The Road

Posted on 22 August 2011 by Ron

The Doggies will take to the road this weekend (Aug 27-28th) to finish off the 2011 regular season.

The Dogs will host the Melbourne Ice on Saturday , in what may prove to be the Grand Final preview as these two teams are set on a collision course to see who will take away the champtionship.

On the Sunday athe Dogs will wrap up the regular season when they travel to Adelaide to take on the Adrenaline in a game that means little to the Dogs but possibly the season for the Adelaide team as they struggle to make the playoffs.

Even though these games are of no signifigance to the playoff race for the Dogs they want to be in good form the weekend before the playoffs so there should be some good hockey coming up.

Doggie Sweep Weekend

Posted on 22 August 2011 by Ron

This weekend the AIHL had only 2 games scheduled and the Ice Dogs were featured in both and came away with all 6 points on offer.

In a fiery game Saturday the Knoghts came down to Sydney and had a win and a scoring title for their scoring sensation Addison De Boer was just 2 points away from tying the record.

In both cases the knights were unable to acheive their goals as the Dogs beat the Knights 3-2 and help De Boer to just one point.

Jimmy Herbert was superb and deserves the title of best goalie in the league after his outstanding performance including a stopped penalty shot by who else De Boer.

In the Sunday game the Bears finished their dismal season off with another loss as the Doggies coasted to a 4-2 win and now get ready for the final road trip of the year and the playoffs.

Big doggies crowd for both games and the Doggies would like to thank all the fans and supporters who came out to cheer us on in 2011.

Its still a big game for the Dogs as they get their game set for the finals and try to take the Series against the Bears 4-0.

Dog Vs Knights – Last Home Game of 2011

Posted on 18 August 2011 by Ron

In what will be the last home game of the season for the Ice Dogs, the Canberra Knights come to Liverpool for the 5:00pm game on Saturday Aug 20th.

In a game that has a lot of importance for the Ice Dogs as they are yet to solidify a 3rd place finish this season. Needing just 2 points in the next 4 games to ensure a 3rd place finish, the Dogs hope to pick up those points Saturday night in front of another packed and loud Ice Dog crowd.

Canberra Knights has the top assist getter in league history with them,  Addison De Boer has picked up an amazing 52 assits while tallying 79 points on the season. Addison and other import Britt Ouellette have combined for nearly half of the Knights offence this season. This combination will be ready to go as they hit the ice Saturday.

Dispite Canberra captain Mark Rummukainen talking shit stating  “We’ll come out firing, and if they (Sydney Ice Dogs) want to take us lightly that’s up to them but hopefully it will bite them on the ass” , the Dogs remain focused on the job ahead.

The Dogs have a 3-0 strangle hold on the season series against the Knights this season and want to put the final nail in the coffin for the Knights and their season.

Come on out and support the Dogs Saturday Night.

Doggies Clinch Playoff Spot

Posted on 14 August 2011 by Ron

In a exciting weekend of hockey the Dogs have cemented a place in the 2011 playoffs with a resounding 7-0 win over the Bears.

In what looked like what was going to be a huge blowout the Dogs shut down their offence after jumping to  5-0 lead after the first period.

The Dogs then settled into their defensive game and skated away with a 7-0 victory with the shutout shared beteen Jimmy Herbert and Colin Downie.

In the Sunday game the Dogs travelled to Newcastle to play the Semi-final preview.

In this fast paced game the Dogs fell short 3-1 thus ending the hopes of a 9 game winning streak.

“We just didn’t get any breaks” said head coach Ron Kuprowsky as the Dogs outshot and outplayed the Northstars but were unable to get more puck past Northstar goalie Ezzy.

“Its was a matter of a couple crossbars, a disallowed goal and a goal post that seperated us” continued the coach , “But this sets us up for the playoffs against them and now we have more to play for than just a spot on the ladder, so they should watch out as we will try a few new things next time we meet in Melbourne”

The Dogs will sure up their 3rd spot on the ladder next weekend when they play another double header here in Sydney.

For the final home game of the year the Dogs host the Knights on Saturday at Liverpool and then play the Bears Sunday at Penrith.

Make sure you come down to  cheer on the Dogs and wish them well as they head for the playoffs.

Dogs – Newcastle Aug 14

Posted on 12 August 2011 by Ron

Doggies dropped a close one but came away with more positives than negatives.

In a close fought battle the Dogs Powerplay were unable to get things rolling while all 3 Newcastle goals came off Penalty situations.

The Dogs played a fast skating, high intencity game and went away from their usual physical style to feel out the Northstars and get a better feel for the team they will most probably play in Melbourne for the Semi-Finals.

“The win would have been nice but what we got was more valuable”, said coach Kuprowsky. “We got to see their weaknesses, and even though we did not capitalize on them we now know where they are”

Dogs Beat Knights

Posted on 01 August 2011 by Ron

The Dogs Headed up the Federal Highway on Saturday to play against the Canberra Knights.

With the playoff picture starting to come a bit more clear the Doggies know that each game is a big game and a must win if they plan to make the playoff round this year.

With that in mind the Dogs got the quick jump on the Knights and with import Bert Malloy netting 2 and Mitch Bye continuing his scoring streak by notching one the Dogs went into the shed after the first period 3-1.

The second period saw the Doggies taking a few penalties and were continually opening the door for a Knights comeback as the knights won the second period and it was 4-3 after the 2nd.

In a see-sawing third period the Dogs went up 5-3 on Billy Cliffs goal but the stubborn Knights refused to give up and closed the gap again to one and with just under 5 minutes to making it 5-4 and it was nervous times for the Doggies and the loyal supporters who came down to Canberra with the Doggies.

But with time running down Matt Monaghan put away his second for the evening and all hopes for Canberra that night as the Dogs took the lead and eventually the game 6-4.

This was a big win for the Dogs as they now hope to clinch a playoff spot next weekend when the host the Bears at Liverpool on Saturday and the NorthStars in Newcastle Sunday night.

See you all there…

Sweet Win For Dogs Over NorthStars

Posted on 27 July 2011 by Ron

In a action packed game at the Hunter Ice Arena the Dogs came up against the 2nd placed Newcastle NorthStars in a game that met up will all expectations.

The game started off with some excellent passing and fast skating until the Dogs ran into some penalty trouble in the first period. Despite killing multiple back to back penalties and even a extened 5-3 penalty the NorthStars broke through twice to take a 2-0 lead after the first period.

Determination and spirit was the order of the day as the Dogs rose up and with the help of Mitch Bye and Brook Robson the Dogs equalized and sent the game to a 2-2 draw at the end of the second period.

The Dogs then pounced on a penalty opportunity and led the game 3-2 after Bye notched his second of the evening. The NorthStars fought back and equalized and then it was a nervous 5 minutes as each team traded scoring opportunities but without any luck on either side the game was destined for overtime shootout.

Going into this game the Doggies have not  been involved in any overtime action so it was a new feeling on the Dogs bench and when Scott Stephenson buried a rocket over the top of Australian All-star goalie Matt Ezzy you could feel the momentum swing.

Up stepped the Newcasle scoring sensation Brian Bales to attempt to level the shootout but was denied by Jimmy Herbert with a spectacular save. Next up for the Dogs was Import Ricky Helmbrecht who calmly skated in on Ezzy and in a move worthy of the NHL hi-lite reel made a move that has most of the fans are still talking about today as he undressed Ezzy and all but put the icing on the cake.

Newcastle had one chance to keep the shootout alive but again Herbert was too good and the Dogs skate away with the win.

These two teams will have another crack at each other on Sunday August 14th when the Dogs travel back up to Newcastle to round out the season series with the NorthStars.

Dogs Beat Bears 5-2

Posted on 27 July 2011 by Ron

This game was a very important game for the dogs and they did not disappoint as they rolled on to a 5 – 2 victory of the Bears.

It was a sluggish first period as both teams struggled to gain any momentum until the Doggies Mitch Bye struck and took the dogs to a 1-0 lead going into the sheds at the end of the first.

Then then Doggies stepped it up in the 3rd scoring 3 unanswered goals and led the Bear 4-0 going into the final frame.

The 3rd period say some questionable calls and some ragged hockey as the Dog skated away with a 5-2 win and now lead the season series with the Bears 2-0.

The two teams clash again Saturday August 13th at Liverpool. See you there.

Dog Host Mustangs July 24, 2011

Posted on 18 July 2011 by Ron

The Cityview Ice Dogs have continued their march to the finals, earning their third straight victory against a resilient Mustangs outfit at the Liverpool Catholic Club Ice Centre.

The 3-1 win cemented the Ice Dogs third spot on the ladder, opening up a four point lead over the Adelaide Adrenaline and having played the least amount of games in the league.

But both teams may be without players after several fights broke out.

In a highly entertaining game, the Mustangs played a very enthusiastic brand of hockey while trying to match the Ice Dogs dominant aggression.

It appeared the tactic paid off with the teams going to the sheds locked at one a piece after two.

Early in the third the Ice Dogs star import Brooke Robson got his second after a powerful shot was too hot for the goalie to handle and the puck trickled over the line.

The goal was set up by David Dunwoodie, who took advantage of a line change to make a break down the far side before finding Robson unmarked.

The match was starting to boil over as the Ice Dogs Andrew White and Mustangs Ryan Bennett began trading heated verbal barbs, leading to a 10-minute penalty for White.

But the main event was minutes later as Dunwoodie and Mustangs Captain Shane Hardy shed their gloves and helmets and, in true Ice Hockey tradition, beat each senseless, earning them an early shower and at least a week on the sidelines.

This eruption of tension brought the crowd to their feet but they were in for more as the Mustangs Dean Dunstan and Ice Dogs Scott Stephenson each received four minute penalties for roughing six minutes from time.

However, when both teams got back to playing hockey, the Mustangs were relentless in attack but the Ice Dogs showed their true defensive credentials, even sealing the 3-1 win with an open-netter three seconds from time.

Brooke Robson proved the difference between the two teams with two strong goals but said the Mustangs fought hard to be in the game.

“You got to give them credit, they were very composed at the back end and they found a way to hang in there because we didn’t put them away early so most of it falls on us not being able to capitalise on our chances,” Robson said.  “We definitely have the capabilities to play a lot better than we did tonight.”

“The Bears are coming here on Saturday and we get to welcome them to our barn for the first time and they played us tough last game so it’s going to be a tough game like it was today with Melbourne so we definitely got to lock it down for that one.”

“The next game we are travelling up to Newcastle for the first time too.”

“I’ve never played in Newcastle before and I’m still just really adjusting to the league so I’ll just bring my A-game and have some fun again.”

The Dogs play the Bears next Saturday at Liverpool before heading up the Freeway on Sunday for the match against the North Stars in Newcastle.

Dogs vs Adelaide Sunday July 17

Posted on 13 July 2011 by admin

Ice Dogs and Adrenaline always a thriller

The dogs kept their playoff asperations alive with a 3-1 win over the Adrenaline sunday night at Liverpool.

In a game the dogs looked hungry for they took the lead early and never looked back as the rolled to victory and place themselves in 3rd place on the league ladder.

Strong goaltending by Jimmy herbert and a sterile Adelaide powerplay (who went 0-13) helped the dogges to their 11th win of the season and topped off a 6 point weekend.

Doggies next game is against the Mustangs as they try to put some distance between themselves and the rest of the pack.

Dog Split Gold Coast Road Trip

Posted on 13 July 2011 by Ron

In a less than rememberable road trip to the Gold Coast the only real winners here were the Gold Coast barkeepers. Still dispite the lack lustured effort the Dogs came away with a split as the second game was called off due to unsafe ice conditions.

Dogs wear down tongues to finish at 5-0

Posted on 05 July 2011 by admin

Dogs take on the tongues this weekend

The Cityview Sydney Ice Dogs have returned to the winners circle with a 5-0 shutout over a shorthanded Gold Coast Blue Tongues at the Liverpool Catholic Club Ice Centre.

The Blue Tongues travelled to Sydney with only 13 players, including two goalkeepers, but showed great tenacity to hold the home team scoreless for 28 minutes of the match.

It was really a game for the glovemen as the Blue Tongues keeper kept the Gold Coast in the match for much of the game and the Ice Dogs Jimmy Herbert earning his first AIHL shutout.

First period play was a mixture of frustration and confusion as the Ice Dogs were attacking heavily but couldn’t break the Blue Tongues resolute defence.

The highlight of the period was a rare penalty shot for the Blue Tongues, to which Herbert expertly dealt with.

The goalless opening period was not through lack of trying as the Ice Dogs had 18 shots on goal to the Blue Tongues five.

The second period saw many near misses as both teams set up shots but just couldn’t find the back of the net.

The Dogs were still attacking strongly, but it took until the final two minutes of the period to break the defence.

Andrew White scored the long range slap shot to give the crowd something to cheer about.  The Dogs pushed for a second before the end of the period, and despite going close, went to the final break one goal up.

The third period continued where the second one finished as new import ‘Bert’ Malloy slotted the Dogs second goal from close range.

But the Blue Tongues wouldn’t give up, going on several strong attacking raids and testing the Dogs defence.  However the Dogs showed that they do have the best defence in the league to hold the Blue Tongues at bay. Three minutes from time, Brett Thomas extended the lead to three after White thundered a shot into the boards from the other side of the blue line before Thomas deftly cleaned up the scraps.

Then to rub salt into the Blue Tongues wounds Matt Monaghan slotted two goals in the final minute before being denied a hattrick as his shot ricocheted off the far post.

Forward Chris Sekura said the Dogs were glad to get the win after a tough couple of weeks and were looking forward to continuing their dominance over the Blue Tongues on the Gold Coast.

“What we took out of the losses to Newcastle and the Melbourne Ice was that we just need to stick to our systems and we can’t underestimate any team in the league – they’re the top two teams in the league – so to win this league we’ll have to play better against those teams, stick to our systems play hard and we can beat any team on our day.”

“The Gold Coast games are another set of important games for us.”  “Right now we are up to two-nil in the series with the Gold Coast, so those two games are six points that will put us on 30, I believe, so those are two massive games for us to win.”

The Dogs will play a double header on the Gold Coast next week before returning to Sydney to take on the Bears in Penrith and the Adrenaline in Liverpool the following week.

Dogs fought back to lead 3-2 but fell short

Posted on 26 June 2011 by admin

The Cityview Sydney Ice Dogs have suffered a second successive loss, this time going down to the table-topping Newcastle North Stars 7-4 at the Liverpool Catholic Club Ice Centre.

The loss has seen the Dogs drop to fourth on the ladder; however they still have plenty of games in hand over their nearest rivals.

In a tough match, the Dogs rued their missed opportunities as they found it difficult to convert chances into goals, despite dominating in attack during the opening period.

The most telling passage of the period was during an Ice Dogs powerplay when the home side conceded the opening two goals of the match on the back of almost identical 2-on-1 breakaways.

The Dogs, on the other hand, went for long range slap shots, which finally paid off with four minutes left in the period when Andrew White hit a strong goal after some good lead up work from Matt Monaghan and Ricky Helmbrecht.

The Dogs stayed on the attack putting pressure on the North Stars keeper until a strong shot from Scott Stephenson rebounded for Helmbrecht to slot the Ice Dogs second and send the teams to the sheds at 2-all.

The score really did not reflect the dominance of the Dogs who led the shots on goal 24-5, and the frustration showed as skirmishes threatened to explode throughout the period.

The second period saw the Dogs straight on the attack as David Dunwoodie completed a great movement from deep within the Dogs half to breakaway and send the Dogs into the lead.  But the Dogs couldn’t hold Newcastle out for long, as they evened the scores with a neat tap in.

Some Ice Dogs ill-discipline led to the next goal for the North Stars as back-to-back powerplays were too much for the Dogs to handle, as the North Stars took a one-goal lead into the final period.

The final period was tight and tense as the Dogs tried to break the strong North Stars defence.

However, three minutes from time, the North Stars extended their lead with another 2-on-1 breakaway goal.

That was followed shortly after by a shorthanded empty netter as the Dogs tried their best to break the defence.

A goal with 90 seconds left gave the Dogs some hope of a fairytale finish, but a second empty netter put the game to rest at 7-4.

Ice Dogs Australian representative forward Scott Stephenson said the last couple of weeks had been a tough wake-up call for the Dogs and they were looking to get their season back on track from next week.

“Playing the top two teams back to back is always going to be difficult,” Stephenson said after the loss.

“We just have to look forward to the Gold Coast series and hopefully we can take a few points off them away from home.”

Next week marks the beginning of a three-match series against the Gold Coast Blue Tongues with a game at the LCC Ice Centre starting at 5pm on Saturday, before a two-game weekend the following weekend on the Gold Coast.

Dogs lose to Melbourne Ice 7-3

Posted on 20 June 2011 by admin

The Sydney Ice Dogs lost only their second home game of the year to last year’s Goodall Cup Champs the Melbourne Ice 7-3 in a physical match at the Liverpool Catholic Club Ice Centre.

It was a close match for the first two periods, with the teams fairly evenly matched before the Ice skipped away in the final period.

For the first time at home this season, the away team dominated the early exchanges with only great keeping from Jimmy Herbert keeping the Ice at bay.

The Ice Dogs first real use of the puck had the fans thinking it could be their night as Captain Anthony Wilson pounced on a brilliant pass from Brett Thomas to open the scoring and have the crowd on its feet.

However, the euphoria around the rink didn’t last for long as the Ice replied just over a minute later.

The prolonged pressure on the Dogs defensive line allowed the Ice to sneak a goal between keeper Herbert’s legs to tie up the game.

The Dogs were lucky not to have let more goals in in the first period as Melbourne had the better run of play and appeared to be stifling the Dogs attack.

But the tough, determined Dogs defence kept repelling the strong Ice attack time after time to send the boys to the sheds at 1-all.

The second half was a different story as free end-to-end play was the name of the game.

But the Dogs defence was equally strong, shutting down strong Ice attacking raids countless times before Tomas Manco set up the second Sydney goal with a long range shot that was deflected and allowed Brook Robson to slot an easy goal.

The Dogs had their tails up and went close moments later.  However, the crowd was well and truly behind the home team until the Ice scored back-to-back goals to hurt the Dogs.

Frustrations started to boil over as the aggression from both teams began to reach fever pitch.

Melbourne soon extended the lead to 4-2 when a loose puck turned into a one-on-one situation for the Ice.

A high stick penalty to the Dogs had them in great position minutes later and took only four seconds from the drop puck for Manco to make his stamp on the game with a long range goal to keep the Dogs within one goal at the final break.

But with the exception of Manco’s goal, it was a tough period for the Dogs who had a majority of the possession but couldn’t turn it into points.

They would come to rue their missed chances in the final period as the Ice scored two quick goals to really take the wind out of the Dogs sails.

It became a messy period as Sydney tried to get back in the game and Melbourne tried to find the killer blow.

There was plenty of desperation from the Dogs but it wasn’t enough to get any goals back.

The final goal was scored with 0.9 seconds remaining and helped Melbourne to their third win over the Ice Dogs this year.

However, the Ice Dogs are sitting comfortably in third place on the ladder with two games in hand over their nearest rivals.

Next Saturday the Dogs are again at home at the Liverpool Catholic Club Ice Centre, this time against the table leading Newcastle North Stars.

Puck drops at 5pm.

Dogs warmed up for Ice this weekend after blitzing Mustangs 8-1 last Sunday

Posted on 17 June 2011 by admin

The Ice Dogs have continued their great form out of Canberra last week to destroy the Mustangs 8-1 at the Liverpool Catholic Club Ice Complex.

However the win has come at a cost with bruising defender Andrew White and classy forward Todd Stephenson set to miss the important game against defending champions Melbourne Ice this weekend.

In fact four players were given an early night in the physical encounter with one Mustangs player sent to Liverpool Hospital for precautionary scans on a neck injury.

Those events overshadowed a master class by the ruthless Dogs over the substandard Mustangs and the outstanding Ice Dogs debut of import ‘Bert’ Malloy.

The Dogs looked the better team right from the outset as they put early pressure on the Mustangs.

When the Mustangs swung possession, they seemed hesitant to shoot and the Dogs made them pay, opening the scoring through White who hit a long range slap shot to the top corner.

The Dogs scored their second in less than 30 seconds when David Dunwoodie tapped a lobbed puck in past the keeper.

It seemed the only thing that may cause Sydney any problems may have been their discipline as several players were sin binned early in the match, however the Mustangs attack can be summed up by their failure to even shoot on goal during a five-on-three power play.

That didn’t last long as the Dogs scored a clever team goal via Captain Anthony Wilson following a clever lead up work from Scott Stephenson and Brook Robson.

Ice Dogs debutant Malloy played a major role in the next goal as his slap shot was deflected by Brett Thomas to extend Sydney’s lead before a Todd Stephenson tap in extended the lead to five at the break.

The hapless Mustangs pulled their keeper but they just couldn’t match it with the Dogs power and strength across the ice, as huge hits had the standing-room-only crowd making plenty of noise.

The second period saw Sydney continue their aggressive approach, with big hits being the name of the game.

However the Mustangs did themselves no favours with horrible attack easily foiled by the Ice Dogs defenders.

It took until the last three minutes of the period for the Mustangs to open their account, but the reply was instant as the Dogs maintained their five goal lead following a break from master goal scorer Matt Monaghan nine seconds later.

Early in the third period, a huge but legal hit lead to the precautionary measures for the Mustangs defender Damien Bright as he fell heavily on the ice.

His teammates and several of the home crowd helped him off the ice on a stretcher before he was taken to hospital for precautionary scans.

With ten minutes left in the match, Monaghan bagged his second after teaming up with Todd Stephenson to slot an easy rebound, before Malloy added the cherry, scoring an impressive backhand goal.

Some late niggle took away from an overall dominant performance from the Dogs as the comprehensively beaten Mustangs became frustrated.

Connecticut-born signing Malloy said he was looking forward to fighting for his spot in the strong Dogs line up but was happy with the first up win.

“We wanted to set the tone early, get the puck deep and play to our system, and that won the game for us.”

“We had an awesome crowd here tonight, the place was hoppin’ and it feels good to win at our home barn.”

The Ice Dogs line up against the second placed Melbourne Ice at the LCC Ice Complex this Sunday.  The puck drops at 5pm.

Back on track with 8-4 win in Canberra

Posted on 05 June 2011 by admin

The Sydney Ice Dogs ended a tough road trip with a hard fought 8-4 win over the Canberra Knights at the Philip Ice Arena.

The Ice Dogs dominated parts of the see-sawing match but allowed the Knights back into the match with several instances of ill-discipline, on which Canberra capitalised, scoring three of their four goals when the Dogs had a player in the sin bin.

The first period was a real arm wrestle as both teams showed plenty of enterprise, with neither team able to capitalise on good opportunities and end-to-end hockey.

There was no love lost between these two teams as big hits were the name of the game, sending the standing-room-only crowd into hysterics.

It took until the 8th minute of the match for Captain Anthony Wilson to silence the crowd as he slapped a pass into the back of the net from a long way out.

The Dogs stepped up a gear from there, sustaining pressure on the Knights goal to be rewarded when Brook Robson scored with five minutes left in the period to make it 2-0.

However the reply was immediate as the Knights clawed one back 16 seconds later before adding a second with 24 seconds remaining in the period to send the teams to the sheds locked at 2-all.

The second period saw Canberra attacking strongly from the outset.

They were only denied by the desperation of inspirational keeper Jimmy Herbert, who was once again brilliant in the goals.

Then, against the run of play, Brett Thomas scored as hit shot deflected off the keeper and trickled over the line.

Minutes later, with the Ice Dogs under immense pressure with two men in the sin bin, Canberra’s advantage paid off to lock the scores at 3-all, despite Jimmy Herbert’s best efforts.

The Ice Dogs were next to score, as Chris Sekura took advantage of an Ice Dogs power play to tap in an easy goal.

Minutes later, star import Matt Monaghan did it all himself with a fantastic breakaway goal, which led to the Knights pulling their first-choice goalie.

Canberra scored to reduce the Dogs lead to one at the final break.

The third period was much of the same as the back and forth of the match continued.

Brook Robson extended the lead after five minutes to give the Ice Dogs a little bit of breathing space with a brilliant slap shot to the top corner.

His second of the night added yet another goal to his impressive tally for the year to nine goals from as many games.

The final five minutes of the match was tense as the Knights tried to break in vain the resolute Ice Dogs defence.

However, two goals in the final minute to Andrew White and David Dunwoodie just put icing on the victory.

The win puts the Ice Dogs back into third place on the ladder, leaping the Mustangs.

Defender Tomas Manco said the team had been a little flat on the road trip but were looking forward to going home and getting revenge on the Mustangs next week.

“We were missing five key guys, two of them Australian players and a few imports so that made it a bit harder.  We had the legs and the numbers so that obviously helped tonight.”

“I can’t wait to play the Mustangs because we have something to prove.  9-3 [last week] that’s a tough loss and we have to come back and go hard at them.”

The Ice Dogs will be on home ice at the Liverpool Catholic Club Ice Rink against the fourth placed Mustangs next Sunday.  The match starts at 5pm.

Dogs put last roadtrip behind them as they travel to Canberra

Posted on 02 June 2011 by admin

A 2-0 and 9-3 loss to the Adelaide Adrenaline and Mustangs last weekend doesn’t have the Sydney Ice Dogs in a panic as the squad was missing 5-6 quality players on the road trip.  A solid effort by Jim Herbert kept the Dogs in the game on Saturday as the scores were 0-0 until the final five minutes where Adelaide capitalised on the powerplay.  Brook Robson made contact with an Adelaide player where he received a 5 minute major and missed the following game as a result.

Matt Monaghan (pictured) had 2 goals against the Mustangs and Billy Cliff scored a nice breakaway goal but the Ice Dogs never recovered from the 3-0 start after the first period.

“We know this wasn’t a reflection of the team as half the team wasn’t there” says player Scott Stephenson. ”Prior to this game the only team we had lost to was the Melbourne Ice, so we are going to move on”,

Missing on the road trip was Todd Stephenson, Chris Sekura, Brett Thomas, Mitch Bye and Ricky Helmbrecht.  The Dogs should be back to full strength this Saturday in Canberra to build on their 5-4 record against the Knights.

Dogs win 8-3 over Bluetongues

Posted on 23 May 2011 by admin

News Update

It was a case of different story, same result for the Sydney Ice Dogs at the Liverpool Catholic Club Sports Complex on Saturday, as the boys continued their home hot streak with a 8-3 win over the Gold Coast Blue Tongues.

While the score line might suggest a demolition, it was far from it as the Ice Dog’s wrapped up a big month at home with a 4-1 record.

The first period began with some golden chances for the Dog’s, however the boys looked sluggish compared to previous weeks as both teams frustrated each other in a scoreless opening period. When the possession and the momentum started to shift, the Ice Dog’s only had goal keeper Jimmy Herbert to thank as he denied the determined Blue Tongues outfit time and time again. The highlights were Herbert gloving a powerful low slap shot from Blue Tongues star Matt Amado and shutting down a dangerous looking 2-1 breakaway.

The second period saw a complete and startling turn-around from both teams.

The Blue Tongues opened the scoring 44 seconds in, before the Dog’s reply less than a minute later as Chris Sekura opened the scoring for the home team.  The Blue Tongues then replied with another less than a minute later, before the Ice Dog’s took the lead for the first time in the match, through a classy flick from Todd Stephenson and a scorching slap shot from Brook Robson.

However, it wasn’t long before the Blue Tongues tied the scores up again.

A few niggling scuffles started creeping into the match, before it exploded causing Andrew White to leave the ice with a bloodied chin, caused by a wayward Blue Tongues stick.  That moment really seemed to inspire the Ice Dogs, as Robson became the first Ice Dog to have two for the match, as he did it all himself to reclaim the lead for the home side with three minutes left in the period.

But that wasn’t all as Ricky Helmbrecht hit a long range slap shot blinder, before Todd Stephenson added the cherry with an almost identical shot a minute later to join Robson on two for the match.

The third period was much like the first, until Sekura had the crowd on their feet with his second four minutes from time. Then, to seal the victory, Billy Cliff scored his first goal for the season after a great spoil from Scott Stephenson put him in open ice. The Blue Tongues just couldn’t maintain the pressure as the Ice Dogs second period blitz was the big difference between the teams.

Canadian-born two-goal hero Chris Sekura said the team was looking forward to a tough road trip over the next couple of weeks, which will see them play two matches next weekend, including against last year’s finalists, Adelaide.

“Adelaide are going to come out firing, they always do at their home barn.  They will be a completely different team to when they came down here.  They always play tough at home.”

Next week will see an Ice Dogs away double header against the Adrenaline in Adelaide on Saturday, then backing up against the Mustangs in Melbourne on Sunday.

The Dog’s next home game will be June 12 at the Liverpool Catholic Club Sports Complex against the Melbourne Mustangs.

Adrenaline will be pumping this Sunday as the Ice Dogs face Adelaide

Posted on 11 May 2011 by admin

Adelaide vs Dogs

The Cityview Ice Dogs are on a roll and want their hardworking and loyal supporters who stuck by the team through thick and thin last season to enjoy the momentum and help their Doggies keep the good times coming.

The LCC Sports Complex has become one of the most difficult arena’s to play in over the past year, thanks to our passionate supporters who provide a thunderous atmosphere.

This weekend it is the Adelaide Adrenaline on the hitlist and if you can remember the last time these two met it definitely wasn’t pretty as a line brawl erupted and many casualties were had.  The Adrenaline had a tough start to the season but have had two recent wins against the Gold Coast and are on their way up.  The Ice Dogs currently sit at 3 wins and 2 losses and will be looking to move up the ladder and calm the Adrenaline.

Will Matt Monaghan and Brook Robson continue their hot-streak?  Will the D continue their tough defensive style combined with some recent offence?  Make sure you are their to witness this clash as 2011 heats up.

Game starts at 5pm at the LCC Sports Complex this Sunday May 15th against Adelaide. Bring a jumper or your Dogs jersey, some friends and your lungs and we will see you there.

Dogs Come Ever So Close In Home Opener

Posted on 02 May 2011 by Mitch Collins

It was standing room only with Ice Dogs fans in full voice as the team made their first appearance of the 2011 season at home in Liverpool, taking on last year’s Goodall Cup champions; The Melbourne Ice. The Dogs however, fell just short in what proved to be an exciting, fast-paced and physically intense home opener with the final score reading 3-2 in favour of the Ice.

The Dogs looked to assert themselves physically over their opponents early on by chipping pucks into the offensive zone and following up with strong forechecking. Dogs forwards; Mitch Bye, Brook Robson and Nathan Walker received applause after delivering impressive hits to their opponents. The strategy proved effective mid-way through the period when Todd Stephenson bounced one off the netting behind Ice goalie Andrew Crowther which was gathered and finished off by Matt Monaghan to make it 1-0 to the dogs at the end of the first.

The intensity stepped up a notch in the second with a number of scuffles breaking out in front of both nets, David Dunwoodie and Obi Aduba of the Dogs and Ice respectively both spent time in the box for infractions. The scores then became 1-1 when Ice import D-man Kevin Enmore was able to bury one from right in front. Controversy then followed when Kevin Darcy of the Ice arched one towards Jimmy Herbert, the Dogs goalie gloved the puck but then lost his footing and fell backwards into his net. The Ice pleaded their case however match referee; Ivan Manco in consultation with his linesmen declared that it was not a goal.  The Ice took the lead a short time after off the stick of Joey Hughes, to make it 2-1 to the Ice to end the second period.

The Ice Dogs created a lot of opportunities at the start of the third off of good work along the boards, the Ice were equal to the task however and did an excellent job of blocking shots. The score became 3-1 when Obi Aduba was given too much time to operate in front of the Dogs net with Joey Hughes picking up the assist. The best hockey of the game was played in the final stretch of the third period as the Dogs fought tooth and nail in search of a few more scores. Todd Stephenson threaded the needle with a centring pass to Brook Robson right on the door step to put his team within 1 with 6 minutes to go. Dogs D-man; Ricky Helmbrecht and Ice forward; Joey Hughes both sat the rest of the game after tangling. The Ice Dogs took Jimmy Herbert off in favour of a sixth attacker in the final minutes but were unable to get that elusive third score in order draw level with the final score; 3-2.

Challenges now await the Dogs in the form of the Newcastle North Stars and Canberra Knights as they play back-to-back games at Liverpool on the 7th and 8th of May.

Nathan Walker to play stint for Ice Dogs in May

Posted on 25 April 2011 by admin

Nathan Walker in action against Belgium at the Division 2 World Champs

The Cityview Ice Dogs will have the services of Nathan Walker before he heads back to play top division under 20s in the Czech Republic in June.

Walker returned home and played for the National Mens Team and was an instant standout at camp earning a spot on the second line alongside Melbourne’s Joey Hughes and the Bears Vladan Stransky.

Notching 7 points (4 goals, 3 assists) in 4 games and selected as the Team MVP, having “Stormy” (Walkers nickname in the hockey community since 5 years old) for any games this season is a huge boost for the club.

The team will be missing import Mitch Bye from May 15th for a few games as he renews his visa, meaning Walker will top up the team to full strength from the Home Opener onwards.

“Stormy will be a treat to watch for not only the Ice Dogs Supporters but for the entire NSW hockey community, who have seen him play at a young age and can now see him perform at the top level” says Andrew Burgess from Ice Dogs TV.

Walker joins the team for practise April 29th before they do battle at the first home game against the Melbourne Ice Sunday May 1st at the LCC Sports Complex.

Point Predictions – Part 2

Posted on 25 April 2011 by admin

Welcome to Part 2 of Point Predictions where we try to forecast how many points Ice Dogs players are in for this season.  If you missed last weeks edition simply go to http://www.icedogs.com.au/blog/2011/04/14/points-predictions-part-1/

We have looked at three forwards so far so let’s take a peak at a Defenceman.  Shannon McGregor will be fresh off the boat from playing junior hockey in Canada.  Although Shannon registered no points last year, it is important to note this isn’t his type of game.  McGregor aged 19 is a stay at home defenseman who has been building his game year on year as he gets comfy in the AIHL.  He notched two goals in 2009 and an assist in 2008 giving him 3 AIHL career points.  Similar to Tomas Manco his role is very defensive so he will never put up the big numbers as he is too busy stopping them.  Hopefully Canada has improved his ability to move the puck up ice and in which we predict more assists this year and maybe a goal or two.  For the sake of this article let’s call it 4 points this season with 1 goal and 3 assists.

David Dunwoodie can go either way, if ice hockey had an all-rounder position Dave would certainly fit the bill.  Growing up he has played all positions from Goalie to Defence to Forward.  On the 2003 National Youth team he played on the top line up front with ex-Bears Warren Jayawardene and Melbourne Ice forward Lliam Webster.  His highest points total in a season of 24 points (7 goals, 17assists) came when in his second season at the Central Coast Rhinos as a D-man.  Last year Dunwoodie found some goals when the team needed them as a forward.  If he is back up front expect him to range anywhere between 15-20 points given the 28 game schedule.  But to make this fun lets chalk it up to 18.  Keep an eye out for the #14 to notch his 100th AIHL career point this season.

Todd Stephenson scored his 100th career AIHL point in the last game of the season against the Canberra Knights.  Despite the highlight last season his points totals weren’t as good as they have been in years prior as he has posted highs of 26 points and 23 points in 2008 and 2009 respectively with a P/G of over a point per game.  Expect Stephenson to climb back up to these figures as he enters his 8th AIHL season at age 22, comes back from a solid camp and tournament in Melbourne onto a deeper Ice Dogs outfit. Todd has also managed to score a hat trick in his AIHL career so far which also came against Canberra in Canberra in 2008.  If we were to put a number on it after a 1 goal performance on the road in 2 games, lets call it 21 points this season.

Missed point predictions part 1 last week?  Not to worry.  Go to http://www.icedogs.com.au/blog/2011/04/14/points-predictions-part-1/

Sekura signs with Ice Dogs for 2011

Posted on 22 April 2011 by admin

After his stint with the Australian Mens Team Chris Sekura has decided to return the Cityview Ice Dogs in 2011.  The power forward adds further depth and experience to the line-up and after playing on the Mens top line with Greg Oddy and Lliam Webster at Worlds he has proved he has still got the fire to make an impact this 2011 season.

Since 2004 (available stats) Sekura has notched 95 points (38 goals, 57 assists) in 106 games and the Dogs will hope Sekura finds his 2008 form where he scored 26 points in 20 games.

“The team is looking good at practice…imports fit in well with a few old faces, younger guys have been stepping up in recent years so I think we have the toughness and strength to take it all the way” says Sekura.  “I just wanna contribute and do my job for the team and take it from there”.

Check out the full ice Dogs roster in the Team section of www.icedogs.com.au

You can catch Sekura and the Ice Dogs at their first home game May 1st as they take on the Melbourne Ice at the LCC Sports Complex 5pm.  Memberships on sale at the game (and the first few games) and can be paid for via credit card, eftpos or cash.  Get a Silver Membership for $165 meaning three home games are free, plus 10% merch discount and skipping the queue.

Ice Dogs sign final imports Dman Ricky Helmbrecht and Forward Mitch Bye

Posted on 21 April 2011 by admin

The Cityview Ice Dogs have added spark to the blue line and bolstered the forward pack with the import additions of American Ricky Helmbrecht and Canadian Mitch Bye. Helmbrecht the more experienced of the two has spent three years playing professional hockey in Germany (Div 3) for EV Hussen and EV Landsberg posting 91 points in 110 Games as a defenceman. His third and most recent season before heading to Australia Ricky split between Germany and France where he made an immediate impact playing for Wasquehal scoring 10 goals and 5 assists in 11 games.

“Ricky has a really effective style, great vision, hockey sense, quick and mobile skater and will rush the puck up ice creating more offence for the team” says captain Anthony Wilson. “He has the potential to be the best defenceman we have ever signed which is being conservative, but he is definitely dangerous” finishes off Wilson. Helmbrecht skated with the team last Tuesday night and has had an immediate impact on the playing group. “This is the defenceman our young players at the grass roots need to watch, his skating is unreal and he will be coaching at our skills clinic which is an added bonus as well” says forward Scott Stephenson.

Before playing professional hockey Helmbrecht spent a year playing NCAA Div 3 Hockey and 3 years Junior A in the North American Hockey League, which coincidentally is where Mitch Bye has crafted his game also playing 3 years for Marion University after playing Junior A in the Ontario Provincial Junior Hockey League. Mitch Bye tried out for the team back in March and will bring a two way game to the team this season.

“Mitch brings a solid canadian style of hockey as a power forward” explains Wilson. “We wanted to find more dynamic players and both Mitch and Ricky bring that in their games as they are effective in both end of the ice” furthers Wilson.

You can check out the new look Ice Dogs May 1st at the LCC Sports Complex as they take on the Defending Champions the Melbourne Ice. The Dogs face the Ice and Mustangs in Melbourne this weekend to start of the season.

Cliff suspended 3 games

Posted on 20 April 2011 by admin

Cliff will miss the first three games of the AIHL season after being handed down his suspension from IHA last week.  The 18 year old was among other Australian Junior team players receiving further suspension after being  involved in a brawl against Romania at the last World Championships in Romania.

The suspension followed an IIHF suspension that will see Cliff miss some international action in the future.  The Ice Dogs will have to go without their rising star for the first road trip to Melbourne and Home Opener against the Melbourne Ice.  Cliff  was surging towards the end of last season making no waste of his new ice time and proved he can be a force in the league for years to come.

Asked if dissappointed with missing the first three AIHL games – Cliff responded “Yes”.

The AIHL season has started last week with Newcastle off to a rocking start defeating Adelaide 7-3 and the Mustangs 7-5.  Mustangs defeated the Bears 6-2 and

National Junior Team finish 5th at Division 2 World Championships

Posted on 18 December 2010 by admin

Mcgregor and Cliff in action

The Australian Junior Team have placed fifth at the Division 2 World Championships, showing some very positive signs defeating China 10-3 and narrowly losing to Korea 7-5.  The National Junior Team were promoted to Division 2 after winning gold in Division 3 last year.

Division 2 is definitely another level and difficult to medal in.  “To put things in perspective our Junior Team in 2005 lost to Korea 11-0 and Hungary 14-4.  To lose by 7-5 to Korea and Hungary 9-4 is a good sign” says Scott Stephenson.  “You also cop a lot of penalties at this level being the lowest ranked team in the Division which can make it difficult to be competitive” adds Stephenson.  Poland proved to be too much of a force defeating the NJT outfit 14-0.

Billy Cliff  notched 3 points in 5 games with his lone goal coming in the first game against Korea.  McGregor currently playing his second and last year on the side, had an assist and 14 minutes in penalties.  Prospect Brian Funes is also playing well recording 4 shots on net and an assist.  All the players will come back in great shape and with more experience.

Despite losing to Romania in the final game the Junior Team has placed fifth avoiding relegation.  It is vital Australia stays in the Division and slowly advances over the years so that future players can have the opportunity to compete at such a higher level.  It does put every player in good stead for the AIHL.  The Ice Dogs are very proud of their players and look forward to seeing them on the ice at camp.

Australian Mens Team Named

Posted on 22 November 2010 by admin

Photo taken by Wulos

The Australian Mens Team has been named and the Ice Dogs have quite the showing and a twist.  Andrew White, Tomas Manco, Scott Stephenson and Todd Stephenson have been selected with ex-Ice Dogs Brett Thomas and Crhis Sekura also named to the team.

Sekura finished the 2010 season prematurely due to personal reasons after he scored a hat-trick and five point game in a 6-5 shootout loss to the Newcastle Northstars.  Manly native Brett Thomas stopped playing after 2008 when the Ice Dogs relocated to Liverpool and since invited back out and skating at Junior Elite he didn’t appear to have missed a beat.

Whilst the future of both Sekura and Thomas is uncertain it definitely has sparked the idea of potential comebacks to the AIHL level.

Tomas Manco deservedly made the team after he put forth his best season to date.  The full team list is still yet to be released, but we will try to post it once it is made publicly available.

Posted on 31 October 2010 by admin

NST 2011 tryouts

The 2011 National Senior Team tryouts are on this weekend at the LCC Sports Complex with a 2 hour on ice session followed by a rigorous 2 and a half hour off ice fitness testing session.  Andrew White, Todd Stephenson, Tomas Manco, David Dunwoodie, Scott Stephenson and Jimmy Herbert have been invited to attend as well as surprise invitations going to ex Ice Dogs Chris Sekura and Brett Thomas who were members of the gold medal winning 2008 Australian Team.

Between 50 and 60 players have been invited to tryout with Canberra Knights, Penrith Bears, Sydney Ice Dogs and Gold Coast Blue tongues players attending the LCC Sports Complex location tryout.  Melbourne and Adelaide had their tryouts just last weekend.

The NST 2011 coach is Vlad Rubes who has coached many of the younger players in National Youth Team between 2001 and 2006.  Rubes used to play on the National Mens Team up until last year in 2009.  A coach who means business, demands the best and has delivered success coaching the National Youth Team is the man for the job and is showing that already by starting tryouts as early as November.

We will keep you posted on how the Ice Dogs players go this weekend.

Junior Elite up and running

Posted on 31 October 2010 by admin

Ice Dogs prospects working towards making the AIHL

The Invitational Junior Elite Summer training is in its second year as Sydney’s best players aged between 14 and 19 come together once a week to run through off-ice workouts and an on ice session.    The last few weeks have also seen Ice Dogs players such as Tomas Manco, Todd Stephenson and Andrew White attend as they prepare for National Mens team tryouts.  “It helps pick up the tempo having the Ice Dogs players out there and also helps show where the upcoming juniors are at” says coach Mark Stephenson.

The program has taken a step up from last year with the appointment of Sam Brewer as Strength and Conditioning Coach who runs the off ice practices and also has prepared a program for the players to do over summer.  “I am pretty excited to be working with Ice Hockey players and creating a program that was specific to developing their game on the ice” says Brewer.

There is a skillful group of young players coming up and Junior Elite allows these players to train at a higher level, which they don’t usually get at club training, prepare for the national team tournaments, get exposure in front of the Ice Dogs coaches and develop towards the AIHL.

Junior Elite is just the beginning of the development programs the Ice Dogs aim to put in place over the coming years to start developing Sydney’s up and coming talent.

EA Sports NHL 11 in stores NOW!

Posted on 22 September 2010 by Andrew Burgess

The must have video game for any ice hockey player

If you have an X-BOX 360 or PS3 and you play ice hockey EA Sports NHL 11′ is a must have for your video game collection.  This years game has more than 200 Game play enhancements including new dekes, an all new face-off system and you can even break your stick during gameplay.  ‘Be a Pro’ mode which has featured on the game for a little while now where you create your own player and work your way up through the minor leagues has been taken to the next level as you can start your pro career from the the Major Junior Canadian League.

“It is probably the most realistic sporting game I have ever bought” says rookie Ice Dogs defenceman Spencer Austin.  Austin’s claim is not wrong as the game has won a few accolades including “Franchise Winner of Twenty Two Sports Game of the Year Awards”.  The game has become very realistic with broken sticks, disallowed goals, the ability to block shots and jump over players.  Even the details of the arena’s are fully captured.

“I used to buy a copy of the latest EA Sports NHL game every couple of years as there wasn’t much difference year to year, but lately every year just keeps getting better and I have bought the last three” says Ice Dogs forward Scott Stephenson.  “What is even more amazing is watching some of the kids we coach mimicking the dekes from these video games at training.  I guess if they aren’t watching it on TV they can at least play it on their XBOX” adds Stephenson.

If you haven’t rushed off to the video game store to get a copy then make sure it’s on the Christmas list as NHL 11 tops all sporting video games once again.

Thank You

Posted on 12 September 2010 by admin

Thank You

I believe some thank you’s are in order after a season that won’t be forgotten as a team and their beloved supporters grew closer together and stronger in the process.  It won’t be long now until the LCC Sports Complex becomes one of the toughest arena’s to play in, in the AIHL.  We have a lot of people to thank, many of whom we have thanked personally over the course of and at the end of the season.  We won’t mention names in particular in case we miss someone!

To the Dog Pound, the second doctrine of the Dog Pound and our dedicated supporters, some who travel over an hour and a few tolls to support the team week in and week out, we thank you for your support.  You all made a very tough season special and in the end we managed to come out on a high.  I won’t forget skating out halfway through the season to see a sea of Ice Dogs Jersey’s, fresh faces amongst familiar faces and then spotting a new banner that read “ICE HOCKEY DOGGIE STYLE”.  It sent a shiver down my spine and I think a few team mates would agree it signalled the beginning of something very special.  Or around World Cup time when a supporter in particular we all know went to the trouble of tracking down somevoovoo zellers noisemakers (or however you spell it) which created an atmosphere of thousands of people.  To anyone who bought a hoodie, jersey, beanie or any merchandise supporting our club we thank you.  Those who were members in 2010…thank you!

To our sponsors old and NEW, BANQ Accountants, Westbus, Liverpool Champion, West Hoxton TAB, Banner Chain, PHA Promotional, VIP Home Services, Skaters Network, Billyard Homes, EA Sports, Superior Distribution…I hope I have not forgotten anyone there.  Your Support will never be taken for granted.  The fact you supported our team and ice hockey for that matter as it continues to grow is very special and we thank you for believing in us.  Plus you logo’s looked awesome on the jersey this year!

Thanks to the marketing guys who built the website, got Ice Dogs TV not just off the ground but took it to the next level.  Starting the Facebook Page to further connect our supporters to the team and making sure everything runs on track during the season is just unreal.  Thanks for your efforts and the tireless sleepless hours you have put in behind the scenes to make things happen.

To the LCC and its staff thanks for making the team and our supporters feel at home.  We look forward to next year and making you proud.

To the parents of players from Pups Club and Up, thanks for bringing your kids to our games and the skills clinic.  Our goal is to keep the kids in the sport and out of trouble and hope they make the AIHL level one day.

To the kids, thanks for nagging your parents to come to our game and to the clinics.

Our volunteers from our timekeepers who we work pretty hard as they keep track of so many penalties, to our raffle girl (she knows wo she is) to our merchandise staff, our on-ice volunteers and anyone who has assisted us in anyway shape or form…thank you.

To the announcing and music team you did a heck of a job this year and we look forward to whatever you have install next year.

To the companies and people who donated prizes for the raffle…thank you.

To my team mates and coaching staff who stuck it out this year through a rollercoaster season, I look forward to skating with you boys next season.

Check back to the site every now and then over the summer as we make some improvements and additions and try to keep you as updated as possible.

Kind Regards

Scott Stephenson #19

BANQ Ice Dogs finish season with a bang 10-2 over the Canberra Knights

Posted on 23 August 2010 by admin

Todd Stephenson scores on breakaway

The BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs may have finished with the wooden spoon but you couldn’t tell that from their 10-2 performance over the Canberra Knights in their final home game of the season.  “We wanted to get a win for our loyal supporters who have grown in number this season” said Captain Anthony Wilson.

Pride was definitely on the line as the game featured plenty of action; goals, hits and the occassional tussle.   A nice way to finish a tough season but the playing group is not naive “it was great to finish on a high, but we still know we have a lot of work to do this offseason” tells American Import Matt Monaghan who had a natural hat-trick and a few assists to boot.

The Ice Dogs started strong and never looked back as Andrew White got the puck rolling with a penalty shot goal.  Andrew White was not the only defenceman running hot with two goals Anthony Wilson also buried two quick slapshots from blueline and Chad Elliot also had a going away present to start the second period.

Stay tuned over the next couple of weeks as we pay thanks to certain people and have some special Ice Dogs TV footage to be released as well.  We will also keep the site maintained over the off-season with the latest news so be sure to check back in every once and a while.

Final Home Game of the Year

Posted on 16 August 2010 by admin

Final Showdown vs the Canberra Knights

This Saturday night August 21st the Canberra Knights come to town for the final Home Game (and Game for that matter) of the 2010 season.  The last time these two matched up the BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs came back from 6-3 to win 8-7.

The Ice Dogs will have Import Matt Monaghan back in the line up and Jimmy Herbert should be back closer to 100% as he recovers from his shoulder injury from 2-3 weeks back.  “It will be good to get Monaghan back in the line up” says forward Scottie Herbert.

Those in need of a hockey fix….last call before the off-season and summer approaches.  The Knights have two wins in Canberra and the Ice Dogs will be looking to square the ledger and finish on a high note for next year.

The Ice Dogs would also like to invite you to the Liverpool Catholic Club after the game for an informal get together celebrating this Ice Dogs Community that is growing in numbers and going from strength to strength.  The Game is proudly brought to you by BANQ Accountants who have donated some Mens Cologne and Womens Perfume to be raffled off.

The BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs would like to thank all our supporters once again for their dedication, commitment and support this year and hopefully see you Saturday night for the last home game of the year.

Ice Dogs and Adrenaline final game set up for a thriller

Posted on 03 August 2010 by admin

BANQ Ice Dogs and Adrenaline always a thriller

Well the stats speak for themselves that this will be a thriller of a game with every game between these two teams going down to the wire – two of them into a shootout.  The BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs however are hungry for the win this as they have failed to beat the defending AIHL champions this year despite coming so close everytime.

After the last two losses in Penrith the Ice Dogs need to refocus and put on a show for their growing passionate supporter base who yell their lungs out with or without amplifying devices every weekend.  The Stats will hopefully help out as the Ice Dogs have won their last two home games in front of their passionate crowd.

Saturday Nights game is also very special as it is the inaugrial Westbus Pups Club Gala Day event which focuses on the youth and future of our beloved sport.  The Day kicks off at 3pm with Street Hockey and other activities outside the LCC Sports Complex and prizes to be won.

So wear something warm, bring your friends this Saturday August 7th from 3pm for some pre-game festivities with the game starting at 5pm.

First Ice Dogs Team behind the Team Photo considered a success

Posted on 03 August 2010 by admin

Ice Dogs Team behind the team photo

An 8-2 win was sure to bring smiles to many faces, but so did the fact the players and supporters had to say cheese for the camera.  In what will surely be an annual event the BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs posed for their team photo with their loyal supporters in the background to place emphasis on “whole” team which is turning into a community.

The Photo took place after the Ice Dogs defeated the Penrith Bears 8-2 at their home venue the LCC Sports Complex in Liverpool.  “Being the first time we have done this it was a great success” says Mitch Collins, Ice Dogs Game Day Promotions Manager.  “We want to do it again next year and give a heads up further in advance so we can make it even bigger”

The players stuck around after and got some photo’s individually with the kids, which were later posted on the Facebook Fan Page which is also growing in popularity.  “We have a special community here that is only going to get bigger” explains Ice Dogs TV manager Andrew Burgess.
Thanks to Nancy for taking the photo!

The Westbus Pups Club Gala Day – The Ice Dogs event of the year

Brenton Tripp with some Pups Club Norwest players

The BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs want to celebrate the future of our sport with the Westbus Pups Club Gala Day which kicks off at 3pm before the Dogs take on the Adelaide Adrenaline at 5pm this Saturday night.  There will be street hockey and other games out the front of the LCC Sports Complex from 3pm.  The Pups Club winner of the EA Sports NHL 2010 video game on XBOX 360 will also be announced plus lots of other prizes for the kids to win just for showing up to the game.

“We are already starting to see the league and sport start to grow and hopefully when the kids get to this level they are playing in front of thousands of supporters” says Ice Dogs player Scott Stephenson. “However to get there the most important part of the process is keeping them in the sport, ensuring they are enjoying themselves and give them a level they can aspire to”.

The Ice Dogs will be holding two mini exhibition games in the intermissions of the Ice Dogs vs. Adrenaline game between some of the Atoms teams who will get a chance to play in front on an AIHL crowd.  “We are hoping to turn this into an annual event and build on the experience for the kids each year” finishes Stephenson.

So bring the kids early for some fun before watching the Sydney Ice Dogs take on the defending AIHL champions the Adelaide Adrenaline this Saturday August 7th at the LCC Sports Complex, Liverpool.  Pups Club kids make sure you bring your passes for free entry into the game.

Ice Dogs streak ends as Bears win 4-2

Posted on 30 July 2010 by admin

The BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs and Penrith Bears re-ignited the most historic rivalry dating before the AIHL in a game that had end to end action, plenty of saves, near misses, goals and some push and shove.  The Ice Dogs took and early lead at 1-0 courtesy of Imports Derek Campbell and Andrew DeCristoforo who combined for a very pretty goal as DeCristoforo pulled the puck between his legs eventually passing it to Campbell who put it home.

If the Dogs had the momentum in the first period it was the Bears who had the puck and control in the second period however thanks to the efforts of Jimmy Herbert the scores remained 1-0 in favour of the Ice Dogs after the second.  An encounter with Penrith Bears Goalie Boucher resulted in Derek Campbell dropping his gloves and being removed from the rest of the game.  This didn’t help the Ice Dogs as Brett Nelson Bond scored on a Bears power play tying the game at 1-1.  The Bears then scored on their very next powerplay opportunity and it would be DeCristoforo again to help out his team but this time he was the one putting the puck in the net thanks to a great pass from behind Todd Stephenson’s back.  Stephenson however was also removed from the game for getting in Boucher’s way after the goal.

That would be as close as the Dogs would get to trying to take the season series lead and will have to wait til next week as they get another shot at the Bears in Penrith with both David Dunwoodie and Andrew White back in the lineup.

Next Game Preview: Battle of Sydney

Posted on 20 July 2010 by admin

Battle of Sydney

After defeating the Bears at home last Saturday July 17 and tying the season series at 1-1 the BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs will be looking to take that momentum on the road when they take on the Bears at Penrith this Sunday July 25.

The Ice Dogs will be missing Andrew White and David Dunwoodie to suspension, whilst Import Matt Monaghan is also temporarily away in the United States for the next few weeks.  The Bears are missing key forwards Vlad Rubes and Roberto Francini so it will still be quite the even field and set for another barn burner.

The Ice Dogs may have won 8-2 last game but won’t be taking Penrith lightly as the Bears have a solid home record.  Conversely the Dogs may have a bit of a following down the M4 after last weeks performance and it could re-ignite the spark.

Monaghan scores hat-trick as Ice Dogs Down Bears 8-2

Posted on 18 July 2010 by admin

Dave Dunwoodie in action against the Bears

Despite being down 1-0 in the first few minutes the BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs were thriving from their last win at home and raced away with an 8-2 win that sure had everyone talking.  With a new massive banner and second chapter of “The Pound” in the stands, the Ice Dogs looked like a determined outfit and had the crowd to match.

A little luck started the barrage of goals with Tomas Manco scoring on a dump shot on net from the red line to tie up the scores at one a piece.  But from that point on it was skill and hard work that would give the Ice Dogs lead.

Matt Monaghan started his scoring spree notching the Ice Dogs second goal and was soon followed by Scottie Herbert who had a four point night himself.  With a 3-1 lead heading into the changeroom it was clear the night was far from over.

Jim Herbert was solid in net making some key saves and adding to the Bears tough night.  Todd Stephenson put away the fourth and sixth goal for the night with Monaghan squeezing in the fifth with a nice accurate shot between Bouchers legs.

With a 6-1 game on hand, tempers flared and Ice Dogs Andrew White and Bears Import Michal Lauko were clearly not getting along which led to an exchange of blows and like a chain reaction other players followed suit.

David Dunwoodie faired well in his match-up until taken out by a second bears player which almost caused a full scale brawl from both benches, however after a few minutes all eventually simmered down teams returned to changerooms and then it was back to hockey. Highlights will be up on Ice Dogs TV this week.

Once play resumed ex-Ice Dogs player Jim Zvonicek scored on the powerplay to make it 6-2 but that would be as close as the Bears would get on the night as Monaghan finalised his hat-trick and Billy Cliff scored his second goal in two games leaving it at 8-2 and making for a good team/supporter photo at the end.

Posted on 15 July 2010 by Andrew Burgess

Sorry there arent any scorers details but due to the ammount of people asking for this i couldnt wait any longer for the games boxscore to be put online, it was also delayed by more than a day thanks to youtube muting the first 2 versions for audio copywrite (it takes about 4 hours to render and upload each vid) which is a shame because the original song i used was so perfect. Team behind the Team Photo this Saturday July 17

Posted on 14 July 2010 by admin

We Want YOU

When we think of our team we think of our supporters…we are one big team!  Also we look out to the crowd this season and we are seeing a sea of Ice Dogs Jerseys and hoodies and love it.

The BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs are getting their team photo this weekend on the ice after Saturday night’s clash.  But we are doing things differently this year.  We want our supporters in the photo with us as we are one big team!

We are looking to do the photo after the game up against the boards at centre ice in front of the grandstand and want our supporters behind us in the stands and to the sides along the boards.  We will also allow around 10 minutes the big team photo for supporters to take photo’s with some of the players.

So make sure you bring your Ice Dogs Jersey’s with you and a big cheery smile as we make change things up a bit and make AIHL history.  You can bring your camera’s for the individual player shots (but not the team shot as we don’t want people on the ice in case they slip over) and we will post any pics we take of you with the players on our facebook fan page at:http://www.facebook.com/pages/Official-Sydney-Ice-Dogs-Page/106016799449217.  All you have to do is click like at the top of the facebook fan page and you can access the pics at the photos tab.

Battle of Sydney

The Battle of Sydney really gets into action this Saturday night July 17th at the LCC Sports Complex as the first of three encounters in a row.  The BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs will be looking to extend their recent success and carry it over to Penrith for the following two games.

The Bears have come off two losses in the Gold Coast and will be looking to get back to their top of the ladder form this season.  “We are just looking to steal points and upset some teams at this stage of the season” says Captain Anthony Wilson.  “The last two games have shown some positives for the future and we want to build on that”.

Billy Cliff got his chance alongside Derek Campbell and Matt Monaghan and didn’t look out of place and contributed a goal in last games comeback.  “He has gone from playing well on the ice to making an impact, it is great to see him stepping up” adds coach Mark Stephenson.

Import Defenceman Chad Elliott is finding his form mid season and has been solid on the blueline for the past five games.  With the new attitude of the Ice Dogs and a determined Bears outfit make sure you get to the LCC Sports Complex this Saturday night July 17.

After the game the Ice Dogs will be having their team photo and want their supporters to be in the background of the photo so don’t miss out and bring your Ice Dogs Jerseys as well.  The GAME will be proudly brought to you by BANQ Accountants.

Ice Dogs win 8-7 against the Canberra Knights

Posted on 11 July 2010 by admin

A different feel was in the air on Saturday night as the BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs made an outstanding comeback to defeat Canberra 8-7 at the LCC Sports Complex.  Some said it was the Ice Dogs of old.  Things were definitely different from current trends this season as the Ice Dogs opened the scoring with a hard fought goal from Todd Stephenson.  Canberra replied but Stephenson’s linemate Scottie Herbert scoredmoments later to re-establish the lead at 2-1.

Although going into the locker room at 2-2 after the first period it was clear the Ice Dogs were in charge and backed this claim up with a goal from Import Derek Campbell.  But all that momentum was taken away when after penalties to both sides forced four on four hockey and Knights Import Sean Scarborough scored two break away goals leaving the score at 4-3 after the second period.   The Knights streak continued as they added another two unanswered goals buffing their lead to 6-3.

But finally the puck started to bounce the Dogs way, literally, as David Dunwoodie smacked a rebound out of mid air to initiate the comeback with 8 minutes to go in the final period.  Next was Andrew White who skated the length of the rink out wide cutting in at the last second to deke the Canberra goalie.  With the scores now 6-5 another bounce would go the Dogs way as Billy Cliff managed to track down the rebound off a Canberra Knights Defender and scored with a hard wrist shot from the top of the circles.

The Import contingent rose again as Matt Monaghan ripped a slapshot top shelf skating down the wing, followed by Derek Campbell who would notch what turned out to be the game winner.  The Knights scored another goal to bring it within one but Sydney held on and narrowed the gap on the standings with the Knights.

Make sure you get to next weekends game at the LCC Sports Complex Saturday July 17th as the underdogs look to steal some points away from rivals Penrith Bears.

Finding positives in a tough season

Posted on 09 July 2010 by admin

Ice Dog's First Goal against Adelaide

Despite a tough season there have been some positives as of late worth making mention of.

As the leadership group and veterans have depleted slowly over the last few seasons players such as Tomas Manco are stepping up to the plate.  Not only playing his best hockey to date but if you watched the game against Adelaide you would have noticed some shifts where he was making hits, chasing his own dump ins and revving up his team.   Manco and his peers are not the young bucks anymore and it is time for them to step up and follow his lead.

Shannon McGregor number 77 continues to grow his game.  The 18 year old is playing solid and mature from behind the net to the offensive blueline.  He made use of his extra ice time against Adelaide on Sunday and further proved he has got what it takes to be a top four defenceman for the Ice Dogs in the not to distant future.

Billy Cliff will be coming back from a solid Under 18 National Championship where NSW narrowly lost in the final despite being quite dominant in the round robin.  Not only with the season shaping up to provide him more opportunity, his game play speaks for itself and will be a large reason for getting more ice time and opportunity to build his game.  You will see more of the 17 year old number 17.

The BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs may be at the bottom of the table but they now have the Underdog tag which never hurts for a turn around.  Discipline is also improving.

Last but not least our supporter base.  The Dogs have the best supporters and wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.  To be going through a tough season, that is very challenging and to turn around and still have the support of not just vocal and evergrowing pound but to the familiar faces we see cheering on their team win or lose.  This is the team behind the team and is the biggest positive to draw on this season.

Home Game Preview: Ice Dogs take on the Knights

Posted on 08 July 2010 by admin

Canberra Knights come to town this weekend

This Saturday night the BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs will be looking to build off last Sundays performance at home against the Adelaide Adrenaline where they lost in a narrow shootout after coming back from a 2-0 deficit.

Derek Campbell and Anthony Wilson were responsible for the two goals from the Ice Dogs and notable performances go out to Ice Dogs defenceman Shannon McGregor and Tomas Manco.

The Canberra Knights only sit a few points ahead on the table in front of the Ice Dogs so the home side will be looking to steal some points head to head and stir up the opposition.

Make sure you wear a jumper, bring a blanket and the family and cheer on your Ice Dogs this Saturday night 5pm at the LCC Sports Complex as they take on the Canberra Knights.

Double Header Home Preview

Dogs get chance to take on Adrenaline and Northstars at home in double header

This weekend it is double the action as the Newcastle Northstars return to the LCC Sports Complex on Saturday night July 3rd to take on the Ice Dogs and the Adelaide Adrenaline will be in town on Sunday night July 4th.

Both games should be entertaining that’s for sure as the Dogs have narrowly lost in Adelaide to the defending champs and can’t wait for the chance to take them on at home.  The BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs are also looking to make up for a 6-2 loss last time Newcastle were in town.

Both Games start at 5:00pm at the LCC Sports Complex.

BANQ Ice Dogs 3, Gold Coast 5

Posted on 28 June 2010 by admin

Dogs take on the tongues this weekend

At 3-0 down after the first period, it was not looking to promising to the home side at the LCC Sports Complex.  The bounces were clearly going the Bluetongues way scoring 2 out of their first two shots from some tough angles.

That didn’t stop the BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs from staging a comeback in the opening minutes of the second and middle period thanks to the efforts of the import combination of Matt Monaghan and Andrew DeCristoforo.  Not only did it happen early on into the second period but both goals were one after another and a 3-0 deficit was cut to 3-2 and the momentum was back in the Ice Dogs favour.

James Esson had his first crack at goal for the Ice Dogs replacing usual frontman in between the pipes Jimmy Herbert after 2-0 down.  Esson came up trumps on two occassions leaping across the net to stop a second shot and also shutting down a breakaway to keep his team in it.  “We are definitely pleased with the way Esson stepped in and took control” says Coach Mark Stephenson.

Unfortunately Esson couldn’t stop everything for the Ice Dogs and the Bluetongues battled back to extend the lead to 4-2 as the puck just trickled over the line as Import Dallas Costanza tucked away the rebound off the original shot.

The discipline again was much better from the Ice Dogs however they did find themselves on the penalty kill but this time forward Scott Stephenson managed to beat defenseman Ross Howe 1 on 1 to then score from a tough angle on Gold Coast to get his team 1 goal away from tieing the game up.

The Dogs kept on pressing with many near misses but Gold Coast would score one more goal with around 4 minutes left in the final period to finish the game 5-3.  The Gold Coast Bluetongues then went onto defeat the Penrith Bears 4-2 on the Sunday.  Highlights from the Ice Dogs game will be up on Ice Dogs TV later this week.

Knights scrape a 3-1 win over the Dogs

Posted on 21 June 2010 by admin

Canberra scrape away with 3-1 win

Canberra’s Import Goalie Lowe tends to turn it up a notch against the Ice Dogs and last Saturday night was no exception leading his side to a 3-1 win in Canberra.  The Ice Dogs played a far better disciplined game and stepped up defence deadlocking the scores at 0-0 after the first period.  The Penalty Kill was a lot stronger by the BANQ Ice Dogs until Canberra’s import Sean Scarborough broke away from the pack and scoring a back hand shot against Jim Herbert.

Despite the goal Jim Herbert had stepped up his game an was playing with a lot more confidence making some key saves in the game.  Canberra however snuck another goal past him before the end of the second leaving a two goal deficit for the Ice Dogs to recover from.  Meanwhile at the other end of the Ice the Dogs were peppering the net with shots but just couldn’t find the back of the net.

Defenceman Dave Dunwoodie tried to find some momentum for his side going toe to toe with Stu Philps from the Knights. Dogs Import Matt Monaghan put his hand up and scored with five minutes left in the game giving his struggling side some momentum and the upper hand until Scarborough broke away from the pack again scoring on a breakaway to make the final score 3-1.

Despite addressing discipline and the penalty kill the Ice Dogs still need to work on generating offence and scoring some goals to start winning some hockey games.

Home Game Preview vs Newcastle Northstars

Posted on 09 June 2010 by admin

Next Home Game: Saturday June 12th at the LCC Sports Complex against the Northstars

Last time these two teams faced off was in Newcastle back in May where the Ice Dogs bounced back from 3-1 down to take a 6-3 lead to lose in a shootout.  Long story short, expect another epic battle to continue as these two rivals face off this time at the LCC Sports Complex.

An Ice Dogs match-up wouldn’t be complete this season without a little adversity with the latest challenge being the loss of two imports to one game suspensions, namely Derek Campbell and Andrew DeCristoforo.   “We have found ways to win games missing key players in the past, guys are going to have to step up again and play some desperate hockey” says Defenceman Tomas Manco.

Import Matt Monaghan also threw out a little challenge to his teammates “lets just say I offered a little incentive for the guys to finish their checks and play some hard working hockey this weekend”.

The puck drops at 5pm this Saturday night against the Northstars at the LCC Sports Complex in Liverpool.  Adults $12, Kids $6.  For venue information click on the venue page of www.icedogs.com.auIf you want friendly game reminders make sure you join “The Pound” e-newsletter list. You can also come meet the Ice Dogs after the game across the road at the Liverpool Catholic Club for some dinner and drinks

The Dogs last interstate road trip ends in 2 losses

Posted on 07 June 2010 by admin

Dogs fail to keep the Bluetongues down in Gold Coast

If the Ice Dogs are looking for any positives it is the fact that last weekend signals the end of 6 weeks of double headers, aeroplanes and highways.  Saturday night the BANQ Ice Dogs lost 5-2 to Gold Coast where Andrew DeCristoforo and Matt monaghan started to click notching Sydney’s only goals for the weekend, but the Campbell-Stephenson’s trio could not get things happening on their line.

“I don’t think we have had a game where all lines seem to be firing yet” says Dogs forward Adam Culligan who found himself in a fight and a tussle over the weekends play.  The Bluetongues hit the scoreboard first on the powerplay and led the first period 1-0.  DeCristoforo broke his cold streak on a nice set-up from David Dunwoodie to level the scores 1-1.

Just as the Tongues started to break away in the third period at 2-1, Import Matt Monaghan replied moments later scoring from a slapshot as he burst down the wing.  The Gold Coast finally broke free capitalising on the powerplay and establishing a 4-2 lead.  With 6 minutes remaining in the final period Gold Coast found themselves with a major 7 minute penalty, but they weathered the storm and scored on an empty net (the Ice Dogs pulled their goalie in exchange for an extra attacker to try and increase pressure and make a comeback).

Things didn’t seem to improve in Sunday nights game of the double header as the Tongues consolidated a 3-0 win.  The Ice Dogs didn’t let up however with no goals scored in the third period and shutting down a 4 minute Gold Coast Bluetongues powerplay in addition to killing off several other penalties.  “Same old story, when we buy into something and play as a team we are the team we know we can be” said trainer Mark Page.  Unfortunately the Ice Dogs will be without Import’s Derek Campbell and Andrew DeCristoforo due to the altercations that broke out in the last half of the third period.

The coach however is confident the playing group will turn it on next home game against the Northstars, “The game we have won was without our top defenceman Andrew White, we have been without Campbell and taken Adelaide to a shootout, it is just a little more adverisity for the boys to deal with and come out on top.  This is the time for everyone to step up their game and contribute”.

“There were two different teams out there; first the Dogs were not the team they were at home last Saturday, but neither were the Tongues.  We need to bring it every night, no excuses” says Captain Anthony Wilson.

If the BANQ Ice Dogs have a chance to turn things around, it will come over next month’s home stretch as all interstate road trips except for Canberra are done.  The Ice Dogs take on the Newcastle Northstars at home at the LCC Sports Complex this Saturday night June 12th at 5pm.

Game Preview – State of Origin Continues in the Gold Coast

Posted on 02 June 2010 by admin

State of Origin on ice

The Ice Dogs have Andrew White back in the line up a win under their belt and they are off to the Gold Coast this weekend to continue the season series that kicked off last Saturday night.  Asked about the situation that occurred at the Gold Coast bench last game and the Dogs are not dwelling on the event “That was last game and we have moved on and are focused on making things happen up at the Gold Coast this weekend” says forward Scott Stephenson who was sent flying over the boards which started the whole skirmish.

The team admits it needs to continue to buy into the systems tha have been put in place and focus on playing solid defence and getting the simple things right.  “Especially on the road, you need to play as a team and come together…buying into the same system accomplishes that” says Tomas Manco who has been in top form as of late.

Scottie and Willo

The Gold Coast have come off a tough Sydney road trip losing to the Ice Dogs 4-1 and then the Penrith Bears on Sunday night 7-1 and will be looking to turn things around at home. The Bluetongues have a perfect record at home so far this season to protect as well and the Ice Dogs will need their full line up to be on their game.

Stay tuned for the footage from the last home game to be posted on Ice Dogs TV very soon.

Dogs beat Bluetongues 4-1

Posted on 30 May 2010 by admin

Wilson celebrates vs Gold Coast

The BANQ Ice Dogs broke their dry spell Saturday night at home in front of a passionate ice dogs crowd with a convincing  4-1 win.  Besides a slight altercation with the Gold Coast bench in the second period, the Dogs had played their most disciplined hockey to date but we’ll get to that part shortly.

Import Chad Elliot opened the scoring with a great top shelf goal on the powerplay set up by Derek Campbell.  Campbell then contributed to the second goal as he shot it through Bluetongues goaltender Luke Fiveash for it to be laying on the line for linemate Scott Stephenson to pop it in.  That left the Dogs in front 2-0 at the end of the first.  Goaltender Jim Herbert was on his A game stepping up and making some crucial saves to cement the early lead.

Second goal vs Bluetongues

Anthony Wilson almost made it 3-0 however his goal was disallowed with a man in the goalies crease.  Scott Stephenson was set up by Derek Campbell again to then make it 3-0.  Gold Coast Bluetongues Import Dallas Costanzo took care of Scott Stephenson with a big  clean hit that sent him flying over the boards and into the Gold Coast bench which erupted into a bit of a malete  when younger brother Todd and Derek Campbell came in to get him.

Stephenson drops in on Gold Coast bench

The homeside found themselves with a man in the box and the Bluetongues found themselves a goal closer as Import Mike Mcrae buried from in front after his first attempt was blocked by Herbert.

But that was as close as the Bluetongues would get as Ice Dogs Todd Stephenson put the puck away to ensure a 4-1 victory and their first win of the season.

Home Game Preview – BANQ Ice Dogs vs Gold Coast Bluetongues

Posted on 26 May 2010 by admin

Dogs vs Bluetongues this Saturday Night

The BANQ Sydney Ice Dogs only have the Gold Coast Bluetongues left to play as they have faced off at least once against the other teams so far this season.  The home game will be the first of three matchups in a row before the Dogs head to Gold Coast next week for a double header.

Defenceman Andrew White will be out of the line up due to a match suspension in Melbourne last Sunday for fighting.  The Bluetongues are currently sitting in third place on the ladder and the Dogs are desperate for a win to get their sluggish season off on a roll.

The puck drops at 5pm this Saturday night at the LCC Sports Complex so be sure to come along, wear a warm jumper and cheer on your Ice Dogs to a victory.

The game will be proudly sponsored by TAB West Hoxton.

Sorry not enough…a WIN is needed

Posted on 24 May 2010 by admin

A heated Dogs v Adrenaline rivalry gets hotter

After missing their top 3 defenceman the BANQ Ice Dogs collapsed 7-0 to the league leading Melbourne Ice on Sunday.  Anthony Wilson was out of the line up for the weekend, Tomas Manco was suspended for fighting in the last minute of the Adelaide game and Andrew White dropped the gloves sticking up for a teammate halfway through the first period in Melbourne.

The whole in defence did give youngsters Shannon McGregor and Spencer Austin a full taste of AIHL action, a blooding that will pay off in the long term.  To make matters worse, Scott Stephenson was sent off for 10 minutes for most of the first period due to a misconduct.  “A simple miscommunication with the ref during the fight.  He was asking me to back away which I was and I asked him to watch the fight so he didn’t miss anything.  He thought I swore at him so I was sent off” explains Stephenson.

Melbournes import Jason Baclig was on fire and led his team in a four goal second period that utlimately decided the game.  The Dogs weathered a four minute penalty kill at the start of the third period and played a smarter brand of hockey with a short bench.

“Melbourne has a top side this season.  We haven’t been on our game against them and they have been firing on all cylinders which you can’t afford to do” says forward Scottie Herbert.  The Melbourne/Adelaide road trips are one of the toughest in the league and unfortunately the Dogs couldn’t find the spark in a crucial month of double headers which featured the two trips to the south.

It is time to stop saying sorry and start winning as the season is almost at halfway.  Fortunately for the Ice Dogs they now have a lighter schedule.  “We know we have the backing of our loyal supporters. We have apologised to them personally for our poor form but now it is time to give them a win and get on a roll” finishes Scott Stephenson.

The season is on the line this Saturday night at the LCC Sports Complex, so be sure to get out there and help the Dogs turn it around.  The game is going to be proudly sponsored by TAB West Hoxton who has donated a food steamer to be raffled off at the game.

BANQ ICE DOGS FALL TO ADELAIDE in THRILLER

Posted on 22 May 2010 by admin

Dogs downed by defending champs

The BANQ Ice Dogs are still searching for their first win after falling to the defending AIHL champions 7-5 Saturday night in Adelaide.

Hungry for their first win the Banq Ice Dogs wasted no time getting on the score board as forward Scott Stephenson buried the first goal thanks to a nice set up from import Derek Campbell in the first 90 seconds of the game.

Despite the Adenaline responding minutes later on the powerplay, the Sydney Ice Dogs raced out to a 3-1 lead, courtesy of Andrew White and David Dunwoodie.  White’s goal came on the powerplay with a laserbeam ‘s wristshot placed nicely to the topshelf.  Dunwoodie’s tally came from a rebound from import Andrew DeCristoforo’s original shot.

Unfortunately for the BANQ boys, Adelaide capitalised on some sloppy plays from the Dogs resulting in some costly turnovers that saw the struggling side down 4-3 by the end of the first period.

No goals were to be had in the second period by either side but plenty of action with Adelaide’s import Cam Dion stirring up trouble by running Dogs goaltender Jim Herbert, which almost resulted in an all in brawl.

“The boys were really charging at the beginning but I think we lost sight of what got us there to begin with which was the game plan and hard work”  says Rookie Brenton Tripp.

Hard work was what would be needed to bounce back from the deficit.  Adelaide knew this as well getting the next goal to make the scoreline 5-3.  Scott Stephenson was at it again scoring from a highlight reel goal off a spinorama slapshot to bring the Dogs within one.

“I was determined to give my best tonight more so for our dedicated supporters back in Sydney who have got our backs and sticking by us through this tough period” remarks Stephenson.

Adelaide would get the next two goals to cement the lead and the game.  Matt Monaghan put in the last goal for the Ice Dogs to keep the score respectable but it would be back to the drawing board for the pups.

2 minutes in the box with Matt Monaghan

The Breakdown: Import Matt Monaghan hails from Chicago in the U.S and is in his second year playing for the Ice Dogs.  Last year he put up 19 points in 20 games and is off to a great start this season with 3 points in 4 games.  Matt is the type of player that has one gear and empty’s the tank every shift.  He is also a “clutch” player which means he will find a goal when needed in the big games.  Keep an eye out for number 17 this season.

Nickname at the Dogs: Monna’s or Matty

Number: 17

Best place to play in the AIHL when not playing at home at the LCC Sports Complex? I like playing in Adelaide, good crowd and I seem to play well there.

On the road again

Posted on 19 May 2010 by admin

Dogs look to turn it around against Adelaide this Saturday

This weekend it is back on the airplane, check in the hotel room and back to business for the BANQ Ice Dogs.   First cab off the rank is the defending champs Adelaide Adrenaline who lost their last two games on the road to the Gold Coast Bluetongues, before flying to Melbourne Sunday to take on the hot Melbourne Ice who have featured in this month’s FHM Magazine.

Forwards Scottie Herbert and Import Matt Monaghan are day to day recovering from leg injuries and missed practice on Tuesday night, but should be back on Thursday night’s practice to prepare for the weekend.

Captain Anthony Wilson made a public apology on the Dogs website Tuesday afternoon to the teams loyal supporters and sponsors, as other players are unavailable for comment as they wish to focus on this weekend’s matchup and turn things around.

It looks like Defenceman Andrew White will slide back into defence, with the possibility of David Dunwoodie revisiting his junior hockey days playing up front.  It also appears there could be a few more line-up changes as the team looks for some chemistry this weekend.

Either way there is still plenty of hockey to play and the Ice Dogs will need to take it one faceoff, one battle, one period and one game at a time as they fight their way back out of this slump.  If history has shown us anything, you never write off the Ice Dogs!

In the Doghouse – Dogs still looking for a win

Posted on 17 May 2010 by admin

Bears win 2-1

Still searching for their first win of the season the BANQ Ice Dogs suffered a big blow this weekend losing to an understrengthed Bears outfit 2-1 on Saturday night, followed by an embarrassing 9-2 loss to Melbourne on Sunday night.

Whilst the Ice Dogs have had a very busy and tough schedule off the bat it definitely wasn’t the start to the season or home opening weekend the Ice Dogs were looking for especially in front of a good Liverpool crowd on the Saturday night.  Captain Anthony Wilson managed to score the two goals in the game against Melbourne showing some character leadership in the third period.  “I think we have analysed enough and it is time to take some action.  We can’t back down…not now” said Wilson.

”Our special teams (with or without a man advantage) is our big issue at the moment” explains a calm Derek Campbell, who has been on pro league teams in this position before who have managed to come out of it and win a championship.  On top of special teams being an issue that needs addressing the team also needs to gel as a unit at both ends of the ice.

Saturday night, the Bears charged off to a 1-0 lead with a powerplay goal.  Andrew White replied for the Ice Dogs with a goal from in front assisted by linemates Todd Stephenson and David Dunwoodie.  The scores were deadlocked at 1-1 until the third period where the bears scored thier second goal and held on to win despite a barrage of shots from the Ice Dogs in the last couple of minutes.  Ex-Ice Dogs goaltender Gabe Robledo stood on his head and the Dogs just couldn’t seem to capitalise in front.

Come Sunday the Ice Dogs managed to have solid start and had the momentum early on until they ran into penalty trouble which you can’t afford to do against one of the best powerplays in the league at the moment.  Before they could blink it was a 3-0 scoreline to Melbourne after the first period all being powerplay goals.  The early lead seemed to crush the spirits of the home team who came out flat in the second to be behind by 6-0 , fifteen minutes later.  “We panicked and lost sight of our game plan which earned us momentum in the first 5 minutes.  I think the boys have realised now that there is no silver bullet or easy way out and we have to work hard, develop urgency and be patient” says coach Mark Stephenson.

The Dogs are off to Adelaide and Melbourne next weekend and have 2 practices this week to address some issues to pull off a win this weekend.

Home Opener Weekend Preview

Posted on 12 May 2010 by admin

2010 Home Opener against the Penrith Bears

Finally the BANQ Ice Dogs, coming off a tough road skid, are playing back at home with a classic rivalry to0 good to miss at home this Saturday Night May 15th at the LCC Sports Complex, 5:00pm.

“We have showed at times over the last four games what we can do and that we have a good hockey team here, so we are looking forward to finding some form this weekend and get things going” says defenceman Tomas Manco.

The Penrith Bears will be missing two imports due to suspension and the BANQ Boys are looking for their first win of the season to get some momentum for when Melbourne comes to town on Sunday night May 16th.

It looks like Andrew White will be playing forward similar to the line up for Newcastles game last Sunday.  “Andrew used to play forward and played forward overseas when playing Junior (under 20s) in Canada, so he gives us a bit more depth up front” explains Coach Mark Stephenson.  “With around 8 defenceman of which two to three of them can play forward quite well, we had to move someone up front, but you will still see Whitey [Andrew White] back there from time to time on defence”.

The Home Opener is proudly sponsored by EA Sports NHL 10′ and will be the raffle prize on the night.

Sekura notches 1st Career hat trick but Dogs fall short

Posted on 10 May 2010 by admin

Defenceman Tomas Manco finishing his check on the play

After losing 8-3 to the first placed Canberra Knights on Saturday night in Canberra, the Dogs needed to bounce back against Newcastle on the Sunday.  Rallying from 3-1 down the BANQ Ice Dogs eventually scored 5 unanswered goals over the course of the game to take a 6-3 lead until the Northstars took advantage of a few powerplays to stage a late comeback and win in a shootout.

Newcastle Northstars Defenceman Chris Belanger worked his lethal shot on Newcastle’s powerplay to help establish the 2-0 lead for the home team.

Linemates Chris Sekura and Scottie Herbert were on fire.  Scottie Herbert scored the first goal for the Dogs set up by Sekura.  At 3-1 down it was then Sekura who put in a rebound on the rush from Scott Stephenson’s slapshot.  In a tit for tat contest Herbert levelled the scores in the second period with a nifty backhand shot top shelf on Northstars Matt Ezzy.

At the start of the third the BANQ Ice Dogs came out firing scoring three goals in three minutes, two of the goals coming from Chris Sekura with his third goal a great top corner shot.

Sekura's line comes back to the bench to celebrate his first career AIHL Hat-trick

The Dogs played even harder but were given some unfortunate penalties where the Northstars scored their fourth and fifth goal.  With the tables turned the Northstars leveled the score with approximately three minutes left in the game and it was onto a shootout.  Andrew DeCristoforo scored on the first shot but the Northstars buried two of their own to give them their thirs shootout win in as many games.

“Tonight was a better indication of how we can play, however we need to focus on playing like that every single shift. We aren’t panicking as there is still a long season ahead and we are looking forward to getting the ball rolling at our hompe opener this Saturday against the Bears” says Ice Dogs forward Scott Stephenson.

The Battle of Sydney should be staged to be one thriller of a game with both the Bears and the Dogs determined to move up the standings.

BANQ Ice Dogs take on the Canberra Knights in Canberra

Posted on 07 May 2010 by admin

The Dogs are on the hunt for their first win of the season and looking for redemption after Canberra’s season series win last year.  “The team has addressed last weekends weak points in practice this week and now we are just really looking forward to playing tomorrow”  says import defenceman Chad Elliot.  The Penalty box definitely being one of them.

“I think we played better disciplined in Adelaide with only one penalty, so I guess we want to continue that approach this weekend and avoid penalties that we have control over” adds Scottie Herbert.

You can expect a physical contest though in front of a passionate and usually sold out Canberra crowd.

Both teams have injected some fresh new import talent with some familiar and reliable faces in the line up.  BANQ Ice Dogs as many know have fresh faces in Derek Campbell, Andrew DeCristoforo and Chad Elliot with Matt Monaghan returning from last season.  Canberra have returning players in Matti Luoma from Finland and goaltender Ryan Lowe from the States with a few new additions Garrett Delaquis and Sean Scarbrough.

Sunday the Ice Dogs then make their way up to Newcastle to take on the Northstars who are on the hop after defeating the Penrith Bears in a shootout last weekend.

Ice Dogs NEW import forward Andrew DeCristoforo

Posted on 05 May 2010 by admin

New recruit Andrew DeCristoforo in action against Adelaide

Hard to say, hard to spell but he should be fun to watch – Andrew DeCristoforo is one of 3 import forward signings at the Ice Dogs this season.  “Since he has been out skating with the team he definitely has a few moves up his sleeve and an accurate shot” says team mate Scottie Herbert.

Pronounced de-kris-ta-foro, Andrew has played two years of Junior A back in Canada for the Cumberland Grads where he led his team in scoring and was 4th in the league. He then went onto Junior College where he amassed a whopping 88 points in 24 games earning him an NCAA scholarship to Hamilton College.

In Andrew’s 3 years at Hamilton College he was the top goal scorer every year and in 2008 began his pro career in Serbia Elite League where he boasted 41 points in 16 games.

"Cristo" weaves through the play

Last season he played pro in Finland and now he is in Sydney to suit up for the Ice Dogs.

” I have heard nothing but good thing about the AIHL from several of my friends who have played here for the last couple of years! Im looking forward to the experience and glad to be apart of the Ice Dogs this season. I hope I can contribute to winning the championship with this great group of guys and looking forward to play at a high level of hockey in my off season” says DeCristoforo who notched 2 points over his first AIHL weekend.

“This season we have focused our import selection towards scoring with players such as Andrew and Derek, and then added some further bulk to the back end with solid d-man Chad Elliot” says Coach Mark Stephenson.  Matt Monaghan is returning for his second season at the Dogs providing grit and the hard to find goals when the Dogs need them most, rounding out a new improved 2010 import outfit.

May Madness

Posted on 05 May 2010 by admin

Lots of ice hockey for the Doggies in May

The month of May is going to be absolute MADNESS and whilst there are only 3 home games with the first home game on May 15th vs rivals Penrith Bears, this season www.icedogs.com.au will keep you more up to date than ever before when your team is on the road.

May 1st the Ice Dogs played their first game of 2010 against the Melbourne Ice in their new home at Docklands.  The very next morning they were off  to Adelaide to play the defending champions the Adelaide Adrenaline.

Just five days later the Dogs will be back on the road to Canberra to take on the Canberra Knights looking for redemption after losing three out of four matchups last season – a first in Ice Dogs and AIHL history.  After the game it is back down the freeway for a quick nap before getting up and going North down the other freeway to take on the Northstars in a rivalry that doesn’t need any heating up!

Finally comes May15th and May 16th the Home Opener weekend when the battle of the west between Penrith and the Dogs begins and on Sunday the battle between Melbourne and the Ice Dogs continues as the Dogs look to settle the score from May 1st.

It will be ”deja vu” for Sydney as May 22nd and 23rd it is back to the Adelaide/Melbourne leg before finishing off the month at home on May the 29th vs the Gold Coast Bluetongues.

The best part of May is the Dogs will have faced every team of the league at least once which gives a great sign of things to come for the rest of the season!

Dogs iced 4-1, but fight back for shootout vs Adrenaline

The Ice Dogs quickly forgot about Saturday’s game and were back to business against the Adrenaline in their hometown on the Sunday.  This game they would be without new Import Derek Campbell due to his fight against Melbourne happening in the last half of the third period.  Adelaide unveiled their 2009 championship banner in front of a packed house and were determined from the outset to please them.
The first 10 minutes of the period was solid with both teams having very close chances before the Adrenaline found some luck off Ice Dogs Defenceman Tomas Manco’s skate giving them a 1-0 lead.  “It was unfortunate and I said sorry to Jimmy after.  It is just a part of the game, sometimes they shoot and get lucky off your skate” admits Manco.
Sydney wasn’t too disheartened and kept pushing on, but were left  2-0 down before the first period due to a one timer (when the player shoots as soon as they get passed the puck) from Australian team forward Wehbe Darge.
Ice Dogs Rookie Brenton Tripp scored his first goal as his teams reply and the Dogs were back in the fight.  With momemtum on their side the Dogs kept pressing but couldn’t seem to capitalise on some of the chances.  Jimmy Herbert again was fantastic in the net making some attractive gloves sides and keeping the Dogs in the game.
Import Matt Monaghan was fed a great pass from his linemate Andrew DeCristoforo and he nailed the top of the net to tie the scores in the third period.  Todd Stephenson later hit the post in the third period and the Dogs just couldn’t seem to get it over the line in regulation time.
This then forced a shootout where Adrenaline’s import Sammy Mantere managed to score the lone goal and give the defending champs two points on the competition ladder.
“It is a long season, we have a good team and we are building.  We still haven’t had a practice as a full team with Derek only arriving last Friday” says coach Mark Stephenson.  “The boys perservered and showed some fight which is good to see given Saturday nights adversity”.
The road trip doesn’t end here with the Dogs off to Canberra next Saturday

Dogs lose 4-1 in Saturday nights clash against the Ice

In front of a packed “icehouse” of 1,300 fans the Ice Dogs had quite the challenge in front of them.  New import Andrew DeCristoforo however thought otherwise scoring the opening goal of the game a couple of minutes on.  Melbourne tied it minutes later on the powerplay locking the teams at 1-1 after the first period trouble.

Melbourne stepped their game up a notch in the second period and capitalised on the numerous powerplays(when the other team is a man down due to a penalty) that went their way.   Melbourne’s Lliam Webster (also a national team player) was responsible for some damage helping his side to  a 3-1 lead after two periods.

New import Derek Campbell was given a game misconduct for an equipment infraction (his chin strap was a little too low to the referees liking) this saw him in the box for 10 minutes.  To make matters worse the Dogs were handed an extra innovative 6 minute penalty just before the end of the second meaning they startedthe third period missing Campbell and being a man down.

The Ice added one more goal to their tally to make the final score 4-1.  Derek Campbell mixed it up with a Melbourne player who found himself undressed with his jersey over his head, but that was the only win the Dogs would walk away with for the night.

Despite the scoreline Jim Herbert was very strong between the pipes for his side.
