Sunday Knight Hockey - The Dogs upset Canberra with 3 seconds to go
Canberra Knights rode into town Sunday night looking for answers to last weekends defeat by the Sydney Ice Dogs and both teams picked up exactly where they left off.
The opening period remained scoreless as the Dogs were down a man for ten minutes due to a penalty from dog’s veteran Anthony Wilson who took matters into his own hands when Knights Finnish import Marko Raita threw a punch at Wilson who dropped his gloves and gave back a few of his own in return. Sydney took on the challenge and not only shut out the Knights on a ten minute powerplay with the man advantage they also had some opportunities of their own with some shots hitting the post.
Dogs on a roll with Knights in their Sights
The Sydney Ice Dogs faced two tough games this weekend starting with the Canberra Knights in Canberra on Saturday and the Newcastle Northstars at the Sydney Ice Arena on Sunday. Mauling the Knights from the drop of the puck the Dogs looked strong, taking the lead with a breakaway goal from Scott Stephenson. Canberra would respond, backed by a tenacious crowd and even the score before the 1st period.

The Sydney Ice Dogs 6 game winning streak has come to an end in a 3-1 upset against Newcastle at the Sydney Ice Arena on Sunday. Despite coming out victorious on the road the previous night in Newcastle when the Dogs won in another shootout, Newcastle got the final say this weekend.
On Saturday night the ice dogs were down 4-3 when Ty Shedden managed to score with 43 seconds left forcing the shootout. With the help of Jimmy Herbert all game an extra 3 shootout shots seemed to be no problem for him as he stopped the Stars in their tracks. Veteran Chris Sekura was the third shooter for the ice dogs and managed to put home the game winning goal.
No Shooting Stars in Newcastle
The Sydney Ice Dogs travelled up to Newcastle last Sunday night to take on the Newcastle Northstars in one of three upcoming back to back matches in the classic rivalry. Dogs captain Brett Thomas put Sydney on the board first converting off a nice pass from recently acquired import Frank Angyal
New Dogs - Old tricks
The penalty box can be a home away from home some games for the Ice Dogs and last Saturday night at Sydney Ice Arena proved no exception. Central Coast Rhinos came into town looking to get back at the Dogs who upset them in Erina just 7 days prior. Even with 4 players in the sin bin halfway through the opening period Sydney managed to guard their back yard from a stampeding Rhino’s attack.
Todd Stephenson put home the Dogs first goal of the game in a desperate scramble from right in front. The second period saw no goals from either side but plenty of big hits and some disagreement settled by some pushing and shoving as the Rhino’s continued to run the Dogs Canadian Import goaltender Bryce Luker. The game still remained close as it approached the third and final frame. Rhino’s tied the game early, but their hopes were crushed as Dogs Ty Shedden scored the game winner with under 5 minutes left. Central Coast tried their best to penetrate a solid Ice Dogs defence, but would have to wait another day for a shot at redemption. Come check out an Ice Dogs ice hockey game; Sunday May 25th at 5:45pm Sydney Ice Arena against rivals Newcastle Northstars.
Dogs bury Knights 6-2
Canberra made there way into town Sunday night as the Ice Dogs faced the Knights at home. Strang picked up where he left off from Saturday scoring from an impossible angle and throwing a bone for the Ice Dogs to chase.
Canadian Import Ty Shedden followed suit to provide a 2 goal buffer. Canberra replied early in the second period but Sydney’s Chris Sekura managed to whack the puck out of mid air into the goal from a team mates Slapshot to put out the Knights fire. Young Jimmy Herbert made his fair share of saves to keep the home side in check as they polished off the Canberra Knights with a 6-2 victory.
The Ice Dogs are now 2nd in the league and take on the Central Coast Rhino’s again this Saturday Night at Sydney Ice Arena at 5:45pm, so be sure to come on down and check out the action!
Ice Dogs Defeat Rhino's
The Ice Dogs on Saturday night defeated the Rhino's 6 goals to 4.
With a slow start and 2 goals down the Ice Dogs came out with their tales between their legs.
It was not until the 2nd period that the Doggies started to show some signs of class.
To add to the slow start the Dogs were without Import Mitch Strang due to an equipment problem for the whole first period.
On Mitch's return the Ice Dogs buried 2 goals, one from hard work with Scott Stephenson burrying a lovely second effort.
2nd goal came from Strang feeding S Stephenson on the back door on a well controlled power play.
The third goal in the 2nd period came from a lovely deke and top shelf back hand from Strang.
Going into the third period the Dogs had some hard work against them netting a fourth to even the score with the Rhino's.
Dogs netted a 5th from a great net drive from Sekura and then an empty net goal from Strang put the dogs well in front, final score 6 goals to 4.
Dogs V Canberra Knights tonight at the Sydney Ice Arena 5.45pm.
Back on the Board and Hungry for More
The Ice Dogs defeated the Gold Coast Blue Tongues last Sunday Night by a score of 10-2. After two losses to the Bears the week prior this double point game has put the dogs back up to the 500 mark with 2 wins and 2 losses and equal 3rd in the league with the Canberra Knights.
This Saturday night the Dogs will travel up to the Central Coast to take on a revamped Rhino's unit, followed by an old fashioned rivalry on Sunday Night May 4th when the Canberra Knights come to town 5:45pm at Sydney Ice Arena in Norwest Business Park.
In other news, injured Ice Dogs D-man Patrick Hornacek is back on the ice practising and is aiming to be game ready in 2-3 weeks.
GOLD GOLD GOLD!!!!!!!!!!!! Mighty Roos win Gold.
In what was the most memorable international experience I have ever been apart of the National Mens team came away with what was a well planned victory.
Right from day one in camp the players came out faster and stronger than I have ever seem or been apart of before, I was surprised at the level of talent we had and was so proud when I made the team.
Once this team was chosen and we got over the try out period the team came together and built a family that would not let anything get in its way, we ate together, lived together and kept building to the last game.
Once we got to the last game the team new what we had to do, we had planned for it for 2 weeks and when coach McKenna addressed us with the game plan the team executed it to perfection.
Australia 1 China 0.
Off to division one.

Ice Dogs V Iceland
Ice Dogs defeat Iceland 3 goals to one in what fans call one of the most exciting games they have seen.
In front of a large crowd without Anthony Wilson, Scott Stephenson, Chris Sekura, Andrew White and Brett Thomas due to National Team camp, the Ice Dogs played their hearts out.
Playing all their youthful players including new signed import Tyler Shedden and young Jimmy Herbert in net, the Ice Dogs came out on top.
Jimmy Herbert saw 55 shots from the Icelanders and only allowing one goal.
Be sure to see the Dogs home opener against the Bears on Thursday the 24th April at 7.30pm.

Ice Dogs in Negotiations with Sydney Ice Arena
Hopefully the Ice Dogs will secure the Sydney Ice Arena as their new home venue.
In what I believe is one of the nicest rinks in the country it would be a shame for us to not be able to utilise it.
With the move of the team in 2008 from Blacktown the Ice Dogs lose some of the sponsors previously held however we hope to pick up some new ones that would like to come to the New Arena and watch the Dogs.
The Ice Dogs should know withing the next couple of weeks if they sign a contract or not, 2 meeting have been held between the Dogs and Sydney Ice Arena.
Keep an eye out and we will also keep you informed.

CLOSURE AND SAD DAY FOR BLACKTOWN ICE ARENA
Dear fans, from the deepest part of my heart I apologise for not informing you earlier of the closure of the Blacktown Ice Arena.
It was something we hoped would never have to happen however when a man pours his heart and soul into a business that is one thing, when a man also taps into his retirement money that is when times are tough.
For the last 7 years we ran the rink at a loss, with breaking machinary, delapedated building that we so called put lip stick on a pig enough was enough.
You can only fix another mans belongings for so long without one cent of support from the land lord or any other interested party.
I would like to that all our fans during the time at Blacktown, our fantastic sponsors that we not only built great working relationships with but friendships, the players the other teams and the league for supporting the rink as much as you all could.
John ( Dad ) ( Carol ) mum and myself, Anthony, would not have lasted nearly as long as we did without you all.
However all is not lost, we have a fantastic base of players that will follow the team, we have fantastic fans that we know will follow us and we have sponsors that we know will come with us.
We are in negotiations with another rink for next season and we hope to have more information in the next couple of weeks.
Please email me at willoice@hotmail.com or phone me on 0414945563.
Regards,
Anthony Wilson
